Lonely in San Antonio...

Well, I ain't in Juneau anymore, I've relocated to San Antonio TX(working graveyard so the heat ain't killing me). It's been a while, and things have been really crazy for the past 6 or so months and my priorities were not focused on rifles and or shooting.

Now I'm ready to get back behind the trigger and have some fun. I really need to find a place to do some serious mid range, 300-500 yard plinking/shooting. I typically load at the range, so a place that can accommodate this ailment would be a plus. Are their any San Antonio (or close enough) locals that can help me get a little quality trigger time? I'm on the far west side outside 1604.

I like dark beer, cruising on the Honda, and long conversations about how outdated the 30-06 is.

Funny! ;D
Ain't been to San Antonio since Basic Training in April of '77! We shot on Base and the ammo was free!

I too live in San Antonio, and you would think a place this big would have a long range set up.. Sorry to say we DON,T. A Place to Shoot has 200 yards max. Dietz range has a bit longer. Good luck with your search. If you find a place. please let me know. And welcome to San Antonio, and the HEAT.. Tommy Mc. By the way Dietz is 30 miles north on IH 35.. Tommy.. There is one more ,but I would not call it a nice range . The Bullet Hole on HWY 90 west. Really bad, but they have 300 yard targets. Tommy Mc..

Now on the 1st Sunday of every month, WE (as in Bayou Rifles in Houston) have a 1000 yard competition. On the 3rd Sunday we either have 300 or 600 yard competition (they alternate between months).. You are MORE THAN WELCOME to come join us! Get hold of Erik Cortina, who lives just outside of San Antonio, and you could follow him in one month to learn the way... It is sort of "out of the way" and a bit difficult to find, especially for someone who has never been there..

G'day from down under. I love San Atonio, visiting family there, nice area. I never got to shoot there though I drop in when shooting in USA. You live in one of my favourite areas in USA.
Next time I am in the "area?" I would like to visit your old home of Juneau (and Fairbanks and Anchorage)

What made you choose San Antonio?

Curious, due to the crime rate there. One of the higher in the nation.

try this site has some range info. http://www.krtraining.com/FAQs/AustinGunFAQ.HTML
aslo a long range in stevenville tx.

Just outside San antonio. in New Braunfels...CTSA....midrange F Class 1st saturday each month.
Range is 500 meters (547 yads)

Thanks for th info fellas!

Shootouts, I'll see if I can switch a day off with someone since mine are typically Friday and Saturday. I would absolutely love to co watch an F-Class match. There is a rifle in the safe that would be useable if I could just get out and get some rounds down the barrel.

JRS, I transferred through work and didn't have much of a choice. This was the only place that had any openings that was willing to pay a decent wage. Probably won't be here too long, at least I'm hoping I won't be here for too long....

Oldhoward, I'll defiantly check that out, thanks!

Texas Solo, can ha give me a little more info on that one, sounds very interesting!

Rdavis, I'm not real crazy about this big city life, but I have fallen in love with the Hill Country . There are some great roads to just cruise and dodge deer on the bike. Everyone needs to see Alaska at least once. Especially in the summer, so they can see for themselves that it ain't always frozen! Getting tired of hearing that question.

BigMc, thanks for the updates on some of the ranges, the one on 90 is closest to me.

If you think the crime rate in San Antonio is bad; you should visit other large population areas around our great Nation, Pilgrim.

Agreed. JRS's comment really puzzled me as I have lived in San Antonio for the last 7 years and haven't had any problems (knock on wood :) ) . I can't say I have heard many complaints from neighbors, friends, or co-workers about crime here which cannot be said for other places I have lived.

I did a quick search online and found conflicting data on this.. some websites list SA as low crime / family friendly while another put SA behind such places as Chicago and NYC for crime (and barely put it above Detroit!). It appears that particular website put Dallas, Austin, and Houston (and of course SA) as more "dangerous" as such places as LA, Chicago, NYC so beware of what websites you believe. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of shady areas in SA but try finding a city this size without 'em.

I digress.... It is a surprise that we do not have more long range shooting ranges here... after all this is TEXAS!

next match is this Saturday. Safety brief at 0800, 1st relay at 0830.
If interested in attending, let me know ASAP. The range may be difficult to find the first time.

Won't be able to compete, but would love to be a spectator! I'm pretty sure I have what is needed to shoot, equipment wise, just haven't done any load development down here yet.

Glenn,
I will agree with you on visiting Alaska. I lived in Fairbanks in the mid 50s. It got damn cold in the winter and was very pleasant in the summer. We lived in Anchorage from 1975-1980. We loved it and still miss it. I have never been in the south east, but would enjoy a visit there. Other than the weather, I believe you will enjoy your time in Texas.
