Huge congrats John ... both on your shooting and your gunsmithing.

We love to see shooters that come up with a creative concept and execute it on their own.

Q: Are you shooting a straight .284? What's your load and velocity.,We're curious if guys are running RL17 with the 180s, or sticking to the tried and tested H4831 or H4350.)

Q2: What action is that. Bolt knob looks like a Savage. Also on the rear bag--are the offset ears a regular option now?

Its a straight .284 win., 32' barrel, shooting 180 burgers.I am currently shooting 58.2 g of 4831sc at right around 3100 fps, so far slight pressure signs in primers but no bolt lift problems. Most of the experienced shooters at lodi told me when barrel gets a few hundred rounds through it i may have to drop the powder back as they found the barrel might speed up. The gun only had about 80 rounds of development loads through it before lodi, i finished machineing and assembly on monday night, rained tuesday, did load workup wednesday and thursday nights, loaded rounds friday night and headed to lodi 4:30 sat morning.I have some RE17 sitting here to try but now i'm thinking why screw with something thats working!
Its a savage target action trued up by Jim at Center Shot Rifles, factory trigger, with a sightron 8x32-56 scope. The rear bag is a SEB from Ernie in Gillette Wy., it has the twisted ears on it so you can rest your hand right along side of stock and I really like it this way very comfortable. Ernie had one in stock when I called so it looks like it's not a special order deal or I got lucky.
Its been a busy winter I also made the co-axial rest in the picture, worked really well this past weekend but as always there's some small tweeking to do.

John,

I've featured your rifle in the Bulletin today. Maybe you could take another, sharper) picture of the gun on the ground for the bulletin.

People have asked about your velocity -- 3100 fps. That's smokin', even with a 32' barrel. What chronograph brand did you use? Some are more 'optimistic' than others.

Again, congrats on a great 'home-built' rig!

I am as doughting as everyone. I am using just a cheap chrony but the balistic program i used to get on at 800,900,1000,and 1200 at lodi were really close elevation wise using 3100 as my speed? I read alot about .284s prior to building this one so the speeds suprised me also, if anyone in central wisconsin has a good chronograph please contact me i would love to know for sure if it is that fast. The load im using is slightly compressed and i am a ways off the lands which they told me will increase speeds a little.

Congratulations on your win and your gun.
What BC did you use for the Bergers in your ballistics software? With EXBAL, I get similar come ups from an 800 yard zero if I use the new .659 BC at 3100 as with the old .684 BC going 50-75fps slower. This stuff drove me nuts until I got a chronograph with IR screens, especially in the 600 yard matches where you only get 2 sighters.
