Loads for 338 Lapua Magnum

Any ideas for starting and max loads for a Barrett bolt gun in 338 Lapua Magnum shooting 300gr Scenars and Sierra SMKs?

With the Barrett 98B coming along, I'm surprised that there were not several posts on this subject. I have been playing with my Barrett and have had very pleasant results. I used Lapua cases and 250 and 300 gr. Match Kings. I tried US 869, Retumbo, H1000 and H4831. Primers=F215. My gun likes the H1000. 99gr. /250 and 92gr./300. It is "freakin' accurate, comparatively cheap and a LOT more fun to shoot than my 99 that I sold to get the 98. I got sick of having my boogers blown back up in my sinuses with the big .50. ;) I will get it up to Ft. Greely to test it at 1000 yds in June on an F-Class target. Can you imagine shooting a .50 BMG for unlimited sighters and 20 rounds for record on the F Class target? :'(

I dont know if this data will be any help to your Barrett, but for my TRG-42, i found a pretty good load w/ 4831sc and 250 Scenars. 1-12" twist. These are just 3 shot groups at 200 yards, but pretty consistant. one group measured .3395 outside to outside.

Old post, but we played around with it in QuickLoad and ended up with a lot of Retumbo, and the 300 grain Scenars. Gave very nice vertical at 300 yards and quickly made some hits on an 8 inch gong at 1000 yards. Pretty amazing piece of gear. I always thought of these things as "guns" but the term "Shooting System" really applies to the 98B. Everything is so well thought out. But the barrel is the most amazing thing I've ever seen. Fluted with the brake, but it doesn't seem to heat up with repeated shots with a lot of powder. I think we were shooting over 90 grains of Retumbo. I don't know how they make that little barrel handle all of that heat without changing POI.

Been shooting 338 Lapua Mag since 2002. RL 22 82.6 grains Lapua Brass. Federal 215M primer. 300 grain Sierra Match King. OAL 3.740. Have consistent sub 1/4 groups. Now have 1250 rounds down the chamber and still shoots 1/2 and better. Chrono's consistent 2850fps from 28 inch Lothar Walther barrel. Never found this load in any books. Direct load from late Dakota Arms company in Sturgis SD. I'm on my 4th load on the four hundred piece of original brass. No pressure signs. Brass looks as good now as when I first bought. Lapua brass is the best.. Good luck Hope this helps.
