loads for 222

What bullet do you plan on trying.
I have always liked H-322,H-335,Benchmark,N133.The .222 Rem is a great one to learn about reloading and shooting with.I always love shooting mine, have fun and be safe.

Are you going for subsonic? Suppressed? My experience with the 222 is that they seem to really shine with the lighter bullets. I think case capacity is going to run out before you get decent velocities. I could be wrong but I am interested in your findings.

I have had great success with IMR 4198 and h335. Again this is with 40's an 50's

I see you have two posts on this subject, so I'll answer here.

The problem with 77-80gr bullets for a 223 is that the 77 minimum recommended COL in 223 is 2.260" COL. The 80gr bullets are really 2.450" recommended, thus they are single loading and seated with specific jump to the lands.

I'm not sure about your 222, thus the question is get a 77 or 80gr and see what COL is to touching the lands, but if you have a standard 222 chamber, I'd expect powder capacity to be severely limited.

In my experience, my 222 (an old remington 788) a 50gr bullet is touching the lands at 2.175" COL. In my rifle a 77 or 80gr would fill up so much of the case that I'd have no idea where to start, and due to the limited powder capacity, I'd expect these bullets to be at a lower velocity.

the 8twist barrel will shoot the lighter bullets just fine, depending on the distance you plan on shooting, I'd try something lighter like a 60gr Berger match.

We are asking 222 vs 223, as 77-80gr are far past anything typical of 222, especially when it shoots 50-55gr so well.

N133 has treated me very well on 50 and 52grainers. I'm now looking at N135 as the powder to shoot up to 60 grainers and might also be something to try on heavier than that.
Best Wishes

I load a mates Vixen with 60gr Hornady using 25gr 748. This is a hunting load which prints at 100m.

Have used this load for quite some time in a 222 rem 700 HV BDL with good results
Lapua Cases
Br4 Primers
53 gr Sierra MK
24.5 Win 748
only problem this load will spike on very warm days
I have been using VT 133 and Berger 52gr with similar results

I have had good luck with Reloader 7 and 40 Nosler BT's.. All w/Winchester cases. My current pet load is W748 and 40 Vmax, Rem 7-1/2. I set my OAL .020 off the lands. CZ 527

Say what you will, the plastic tipped 40 grainers have made a new caliber of the .222. You can work with a number of powders that are one notch faster than you would pick for the classic 52-53 gr. loads. One that comes to mind is Benchmark. Another that might show promise is Xterminator which is the very same powder as AA 2230.

Boyd,

Have you tried LT-30 with the 40gr. bullets in the .222????

I have been waiting to try it in mine, but that obviously hasn`t happened..........

Phil.

I'm needing help developing load for 222 rem. for 1-8 twist 29" barrel.

In thinking more about it, with an 8 twist and depending on what weight bullet if you want to go with the heavies, VVN 140 or even VVN 540 would be very tempting to me. In 22BR, I've had excellent results with VVN 150 shooting the 80's.
Best Wishes

I have tried LT30 with the 35 gr. Nosler BT no lead bullets that my 14"" twist barrels dictate for California varminting. The BC is a surprising .201. Based on those tests, I would definitely try the powder with 40 gr. lead core lead core BTs or Vmaxes.

Boyd,

Any idea what you were getting for velocities???

Phil.

Which bullet? I have found the Nosler manual pretty good on such things. I loaned a friend some LT30 for the 35s in his duce and he settled on 3800 as accurate, with no problems. Surprisingly enough this is with a .060 jump. He tested in .010 increments from touch to there and past.

Boyd,

I was asking about the 35r. bullet, as i read your post i took it that you had`t tried LT-30 with the 40r. bullets yet.

This is very encouraging hopefully the LT-30 will scoot the 40gr. bullets too.....

Thanks,

Phil.
