loading for 6.5-06

I think I commited a crime i posted in the wrong section,,,,lol,,Hi Guys,,just joined,,but have been here before,,just started loading for my new 6.5-06,,Krieger heavy,,1-8,,28",,Its shooting very good,,likes 120 game kings,,really likes 139 Scenars and 140 Nosler custom competitions,,RL-22,,H4340 and IMR4350,,,Im using sized down Lake City brass,,i have a ton,,stick with minimum charges for now,,Neighbors coaching reloads hes an exMarine Armorer,,I read alot of conflicting info on seating depth,,"on the lands",,,"off the lands",,from 50 to 5 thousanths,,I have a Hornady depth gauge,,

Thanx
Any help appreciated

Thank You,,i know every gun is different but how far off lands??
The scenar should be extremely forgiving on the seat depth aspect, I'd start 20 off and work into the case to tune it.
RL 26 in that case should be a winner if you wanted to try a slower powder.

Can anybody tell me what a necked down Lapua 30-06 case to 6.5 loaded round neck dia. is ?

I shoot a 6.5-06imp with 22. I use light neck tension and soft seat.......I only shoot Bob C.'s 141's & 142SMK's around 3150ish. I pre load for matches and seat the last 10ish K in the chamber. It works for me with this set up but not with the PPC's, 30 Major or BRA.

Regards
Rick

If this is just going to be a target rifle then seating to or into the lands with bullets may work for you but in my experience with a hunting rifle STAY AWAY FROM THE LANDS. There is nothing like being out in the middle of mother nature and by some means, fluke, bullet jumped forward while in magazine on recoil, does not matter, you go to unload your rifle for some reason. Maybe crossing a fence or climbing into a stand. When you go to unload you find that your bullet stuck in the bore and you just dumped powder all down into your rifle and you don't have a cleaning rod with you to poke that bullet out of the bore. To add injury to insult then most likely the biggest trophy you have ever seen happens to walk up in spitting distance and there you are with a non functioning rifle. Been there done that and have the T-shirt. Depending on the game there are all sorts of good .264 bullets out there. Favorite deer bullets of mine are 120 Sierra Pro Hunter and Nosler BT and Nosler 130 Accubond which would also double as good on elk. My buddy had a 6.5-06 that he used for bean field deer and with the 120 BT H4831 was the powder but this was a number of years ago. As for bullet seating depth for hunting I would not get any closer than 10 thousands off the lands. The bullets I mentioned like to jump a ways to the lands.

The first thing you should do is remove the barrel and put a 6.5x284 Norma barrel on instead. I had a 6.5-06 and disliked it for the most part. But to answer your question, I used H1000 with 140 grain AMAX when I had one. I would recommend slower burning powders with that cartridge for 130's and up.

I use reformed Norma 30-06 brass, wlr primers, 54.5gr h1000 or 55gr RE 25, topped with the 140gr Berger hybrid. I am seated right to the point where the rifling leaves absolutely no marks on the bullet... I use it for target and long range hunting... have taken a whitetail doe @ 875yds which is my furthest kill by far...

Guys more shooting than Hunting,,ive shot almost 100 rounds now,,it going to be tuff,,this gun shoots everything,,
So what are you doing? I know it's only been a month from looks of it but have you done testing for seating depth preference? Probably wont help but, with same case, different caliber (barely), my 140 VLDs are suppose to be less forgiving then the hybrids (I wouldn't think so but could swear I read that) and I just ran a seating depth test today and not too much difference between .03 jump, .02 jump, .o1 jump, touching, .01 jam but I will say the clear winner was being jammed in there. Plus when I look at rounds others are making with the 6.5 140 hybrids I can tell that they're jamming them in there otherwise everyone shooting them that I've seen rounds for have custom chambers.

Sorry guys work was crazy,,alot goin on,,the gun is shooting everything great,,tuff to narrow down,,but looking like it likes closer to lands,,have some loaded but didn't get to shoot yet,,
