Loading a 204 into the lands

Hello

I was wanting to try to load into the lands and was wondering if anyone else has tried this with the .204 Ruger? I am shooting an XR-100. How much should I reduce my loads for my first attempt? Thanks.

I don't have an answer for you, but am hoping someone will step up to the plate and give you some good feedback.

My Savage 12VLP in .204 Ruger, when measured with my Sinclair chamber length gauge shows that my chamber is 1.877" long. With "trim-to-length" at 1.840" and "maximum length" at 1.850" I don't think my cases will ever get to the point that they will even remotely close to getting too long even if I don't trim them again.

The Hornady casings I have are all trimmed to 1.8425" so they would have to stretch out an additional .0245" to get to the point where they are .010" from the end of the chamber. The initial batch of WW casings I worked up all had to be trimmed to 1.8385" because many of them were that short 1.8385" length so they'd have to stretch out an additional .0285" to get to be only .010" from the end of the chamber. The newer lot of WW casings I bought will all be trimmed to the same length as the Hornady casings.

With the length of my chamber, I don't think there are any bullets that are long enough so I could seat them so they are in solid contact with the lands and have enough of the bullet in contact with the casing neck for me to feel safe in using them seated out that far. Just my opinion.

Good luck with your quest.

I have played with the seating depth with the 39gr BK. My first loads were worked up to max using the chronograph with bullets seated normal then I backed of one grain and worked up with them just touching the rifling. I finally settled on about half a grain less powder than the original loads and the bullets seated .10 inch off the lands. With my Savage 12VLP it will group five shots into a 1/4 inch or less and I can still extract the round if need be. Also I am using Reloader 10x and rem 7 1/2 primers in WW cases. Let me know if you have any more questions.

The two attachments that you see are from my Cooper. The first is from factory Hornady ammo and the second is from my handload. In the second pic you will see the "oal" that is what gave me the 5 shot group at 100 yds. Obviously the one flyer is ME...and I'll call it as such.

Don't know if this helps but if you have any questions feel free to PM me.
