load testing?

Hey guys i have been working on a few loads for my .223. I just started using a conograph wile testing my loads. I know how the SD and ES works. My question is why on some awsome groups i get bad SD and when i get an low SD and ES my group is ok. I start all my loads .20 of lands except my mag loads. Thx

This is a little off your question but are you shooting a gas gun or a bolt gun? I think there is an art to using a chronograph and it is probably one of the weak links for some folks in load development. I would put more confidence in what I see on the target, i.e. "awesome groups" than I would in ES and SD based on chronograph data unless you are very experienced with using this instrument. Another point, most of us do not have any way to calibrate a chronograph.

At 100 yards the chronograph is going to be of little benefit. If your intention is to only shoot 100-200 yards then ignore the chrono and pay more attention to the group agg's. If you intend on shooting longer ranges ie. 600- 1000 yard, then imo, you need to watch the chrono more carefully. To my understanding a high ES will generally equate to major vertical stringing in a group. Something that is not so easily noticed at 100-200 yards.
