Good load for 223 using 50g. bullets in AR

I load the 50 grain hornady sx also, but use 335 powder. Great for coyotes and easy on fur. Also good in my 222.

I was going to add in benchmark, I just couldn't remember the charge and I was ready for bed. I wish I had started with that powder a long time ago.

If your AR has a 1in7 or a 1in8 twist you should forget 50 grain projectiles. My 1in8 White Oak does well with 60 grainers.

40/50 gr with 25 gr Varget/RE 15. Been doing it for many years.

My 1/7 will shoot 50gr varmint bullets like a laser beam.... Won't know till you try...

My 7 twist 20" loves the midway dog town bullets! Not Benchmark but 28 grains of CFE 223 shoots sub half moa fairly consistent which is impressive for such cheap bullets. I'm going to play with benchmark in the future just for fun.

My 1 in 8 twist with a 20 inch barrel shoots the 53 SMK really well. I was concerned about the twist rate being too fast but tested them any way and the results were great, average mean radius of 0.20 inches for five 10 shot groups fired on three separate days, a 200-15X in 100 yard reduced competition, etc.. John Feamster shot his famous 200 yard bench rest group of 0.231 inches with a 52 SMK and a 1 in 8 barrel. He has some comments on twist rate in his book "Black Magic" that are relevant to this topic.

I would try with all the typical SR Match load powders for starters since those have been proven with Sierra Match King 52 (BT) and SMK 53 (FB).

That whole list of powders is long but includes all types of powders so you can decide if you want to trickle or just throw. The typical ones like Varget are more temp stable than most, but sometimes not as happy under a light bullet. So you will just have to go try. I would still add CFE223 to the list even though it isn’t listed In the Sierra data as well as N140.
