LG Front Wing

Hi All

This is a great forum and website with loads of information to be gathered. While reading through the articles I today came across the article about Seb's hammerhead stock which I found very interesting as I have just recently made up a front wing out of carbon fibre that I fit to my 1000yd LG. I manufactured this wing to achieve the increased footprint and stability that the HG's get with their bigger footprint.

My local club here in Australia has been playing with wings in the butt of the rifle for a while to aid with stability in the LGs however I wanted to also do the front wing. The wing is 6" wide and weighs a mere 5oz and with fixtures to attach to the rifle finishes at 7oz.

Below are some pictures to show the wing I fit to my rifle and you can also see the carbon rear wing too in the first photo.

There is also a video of it being shot.

albow, Welcome to Accurate Shooters site, I am sure you will find plenty to read here and we all look forward to your contributions.

I watched the video you linked to and also the other video you have on line with out the wings. What was your goal in going to this much wider forend? Tell us a little about your rifle as well.

My take on your "wings" is your rifle seems at least to me to be tracking much smoother. I say smoother because I see in the video without the wing a little movement of the frontend. With this addition it just looks smoother. Your take on this would be good.

Thanks for this post gives me something to play with a might.

Hi Roland

I will start with details on my rifle.

The cartridge is a wildcat that I made that is very similar to the 30-06 ackley except is .080" longer to the shoulder and is formed from Lapua 9.3x62 brass so it can take a real bashing and stays in shape. The stock is self made and of my own design and laminated from a marine ply. The action is an Australian made Omark and the barrel is a 14 twist that has a stretcher tube over the top tensioned up with the muzzle brake. The projectiles I typically shoot are the 30cal 175 SMK and can get a velocity of 3050 using AR2209 (your H4350).

The inclusion of the wings on the rifle were for no other reason than to improve the gun handling on the bags by reducing the torque on the rifle at firing and also to limit the disruption to the rifle when operating the bolt. The whole plan was to increase the footprint and increase stability.

As far as how I came up with 6" for the front wing? A fellow shooter wanted to put a wing on his LG and his current HG had a stainless pod 6" wide and he wanted to utilise the same rest so 6" wide was the size. Not very scientific I know although it seems to work :) As far as material we originally were looking at an aluminium pod that had been skeletonised then got to thinking about the carbon which has worked out far lighter and more than strong enough.

regards Alan
