Obtained a second 1894CL in 25/20, so I did a little research and found Numrich had a 32/20 factory bbl [w/o JM stamp] for a reasonable amount. Purchased one to convert one of the '94CL's to 32/20 to go along with a Ruger Buckeye.
Contacted a retired LGS friend of mine to do the barrel removal and installation just in case it needed tweeking. When he had it completed, said it screwed right in and didn't need any tweeking to get sight dovetails indexed correctily. Okaaay!!!
First time firing, went bang and shot pretty decent group with WW factory ammo at 75 yds with open sights for old eyes. Fifth and last shot, failure to eject happened. Haven't been able to get it to extract at all on 32/20 cases, loaded or empty. Takes a dowel to remove or sharp knife blade to pull it out.
Measured brass rims, body dia., and rim thickness on both RP & WW brass, both factory loads, used and new cases. All are within SAAMI specs.
Prior to giving it to LGS, did some measuring on barrel shank and made a sketch as I wanted to compare both before proceeding with installation. Didn't happen on my part, don't know if LGS did or not. So had to compare pulled barrel shank dimensions to my sketch, all with .002", the 32/20 being the bit shorter of the two.
With bare barrel, a 32/20 case, new or used, would drop right in and fall out. Same with a factory loaded round.
Using a marker, colored the tapered extractor groove/slot on the barrel to see if there was maybe early contact and keeping it from getting behind the rim. The marker was rubbed a bit, but so is the slot on both of the 25's which did/does not have a problem with extraction. It isn't deformed as it looks like the other 25's extractor.
I then take a 25/20 used case and fed it into the 32's chamber, extracts like it is suppose to. Same happens when it is chambered by the carrier, works like it is suppose to. Then did a dimension check and the 25's rims and body's are identical to the 32's.
If the 32 would stick out a bit, I could understand it being possible of a short chamber, but not what was found.
So, if anyone has any ideas as to why the 25's work but not the 32's, or what is the reason for this problem, I sure could use some ideas as to what to look at or do next.
One thing I didn't do was measure the angle of the extractor slot, kinda have a feeling it might be too steep and the extractor is being pushed outward and not allowing it to grasp the case rim. Only thing I can come up with.
