Leupold VX3 vs Sightron SIII

So I'm debating swapping the Leupold VX3 LR 6.5-20x40 on one of my 222's to a Sightron SIII 10-50x56. Rifle is strictly shot from the bench at paper. I don't personally have any experience with the Sightron scopes, but it seems like most people love them. Do they get dark at the upper level of their magnification range? I had a Nikon 8-32x50 with the ED glass and it got really dark toward maximum magnification.

I have both, Leupold on my hunting rifles and a couple of the SIII’s on F class guns, even have a Sightron SVED, but thats a whole different story, I can easily see bullet holes at 300 yrds with the 10-50 SIII, used the SIII at mid range this week at Berger’s, worked great, shot my best mid range to date.

For me, the downside would be the 56mm bell. I like my cheek down on the stock which a bell this large won't allow.

IMO the VX-III compared to the SIII is not even in the same league and I have or have had several of both, Leupold has good customer service but I have had to use it plenty, not a good thing. optically and mechanically the Sightron wins hands down, again, JMO.

Everyone has opinions on scope quality comparison and also experience with scope problems and customer service. I'll give my experience. I've shot Leupold scopes for 30 years. They've come along way since the mid 80s and they were at the top back then as they pretty much are today. I've been using Sightron scopes for about 9 years on rifles and a red dot Sightron on my Bows since the mid 90s. Both companies optics are tough and very clear. I use the Mark 4 Leupold's mostly and they seem to be on par with the SIII scopes in all areas. At least thru my eyes. I will not and cannot say Leupold is better in anyway today than Sightron in those two models. What I will say is that the only difference between the two scopes is price. I've paid much more for a Leupold scope because I was a Leupold guy than I did for Sightron's. Today, I'll buy the Sightron because I'm just as much a Sightron fan as a Leupold fan. I'll also have quite a bit more money in my pocket when that purchase is complete. I was introduced to the red dots on archery gear and it's all I've shot since then. I've used 6 different red dots which include Leupold and Sightron is the best out there IMO. All that said, I'll continue to use Sightron if their price remains lower than Leupold's for my rifles. In 30 years I've had to use Leupold customer service for a return one time. That was for the first Leupold scope I purchased back in the mid 80s. I had to return it in 2017 due to the turret screws being too tight to turn. They didn't make the model scope I sent back so they replaced it with a much higher end model. Never had a problem with Sightron in 9 years.

I build and shoot smokeless muzzleloaders, My scope problems are greatly magnified simply by the fact of the severe recoil generated by these beast's. In my .45s I shoot a 325 grain bullet at 3100+ FPS, even with a good brake after a few hundred rounds good scopes are prone to puke. Holding zero is also problematic due to the pounding.

I have broken many different brands but as bad as I hate to admit it Leupold just breaks more often than some others including the Sightrons, have I broken Sightrons? Yes I have but no more often than Nightforce.

Wow. Breaking Leupolds from muzzleloader recoil ? I shoot them too. I shoot the 480 grain super slug that White Muzzleloaders made. Obviously not at those velocities but lots of generated recoil with 150-200 grains of powder. Never broke a Leupold. Maybe got lucky. They make great scopes and even if I broke one, they'd have taken care of me. I have ruined Bushnell's and One Burris.
