leupold varmint hunters reticle

I have 1 in a 4.5-14X LR on a custom Savage Striker 243 WSSM, and i do like it. I prefer a reticle for more direct windage apps. when shooting LR. Besides that it's just another ballistic/ranging reticle that can be applied for downrange zeroing, and rangefinding. If your in a pr. dog town the range-estimating feature certainly can be applied if u don't have a rangefinder, and will probably be better than guessing for the 1st shot. Gunamonth is right on the money regarding the accuracy of reticle-rangefinding tho. Here's a link that explains reticle-ranging in more detail-- www.ottllc.com/specialtypistols/sp20.pdf Item C) Reticle Rangefinding

Reticle-ranging is definitely no substitute for a laser if you're after coyotes or fox tho, as they all too often don't give u much time to apply that kinda system.

I use to have one and sold it.

Wanting to shoot past 500 yards is a handicap with this reticule. IMO

I think the Big Game version of this reticule "Boone and Crockett" is great though.

As Gunamonth said, getting a rat to hold still and judging it's size is hit and miss with the Varmint model. But on Elk and Deer size game it would work well because you have a basic idea of the target mass with the Boone and Crockett version.

I had one for my 6mm Rem shooting 70 grainers. The reticle was not accurate for my varmint load, and I had to tweak the power setting to get it right. Windage was way, way off. Ended up sending it to Leupold to switch it out for the TMR reticle.

Depopulator,

What did Leupold charge you to switch out reticles?

Thanks,

Steve

With the 115 DTAC @ 2550 mv, there's very few BDC reticles that'll match up to that trajectory. It was really nothing to adapt the reticle to the trajectory though. My 10 mph windage was less than .5 of the reticle's established.

I also have a TMR, and LOVE that reticle too, especially the .2 mil stadia, that allows for .02 mil rangefinding accuracy.

Just sighted my 4.5X14 VX3 Varmint in 2 days ago. At 14X all my lines were within 2” out to 400 yards with a 221 Fireball 40g, 16g LilGun. Forgot the freestanding 500 yd target at home. But I’d bet that’s near dead on too. The Leupold lines and the Burris/Pentax Ballistic Plex lines are so close with 223 & 243 varmint bullets when cranked to full zoom that I’ve become dependent on them and will not use a Duplex reticle anymore for field shooting. Its one hell of a lot easier holding over or under 2-4” with the Ballistic Plex/ Varmint than guessing 2 feet with a single line reticle or taking a chance and playing with the turrets.

I haven’t used the lines for range finding, have a decent laser for that, so I can’t help you there. But the bottom line is there’s no real disadvantage to going multi-lined, except for the extra cost when going Leupold and that you’re likely going to be changing a 4.5 to 14 power scope into a 4.5 “or” 14 power scope. The lines line up different at different powers. So you’ll most likely be walking around at low power where the center lines are a known X and once you’re set up, you’ll crank it to the power you sighted in at so all your lines will be on.

Burris will switch a lot of their scopes to Ballistic Plex for $50 and the 2 I had done were back in less than 3 weeks. For a long range centerfire hunting gun, magnum muzzle loaders, or even for 22’s it’s the way to go.

That reticle is set up the same for subtension, stadia measurement) in any of their scopes. Go to the Leupold website and look for the "Reticles" section. That should take u to all their ballistic/ranging reticles. Scroll down till u find the VH reticle, and all the subtensions are there. I'm sure the 8.5-25X VH reticle will be calibrated correctly at 25X--my TMR is.

I had one and sold it, sent it back twice could not get it to hold any type of zero. Really sad when you consider that I had an old old Leupold that fell out of a tree and landed on a stump but it was fine just looked a little worse, its a shame that we can not make as good a scope here as they can in europe. But they had all the money in the country to build the Hubble telescope and cound not even get that right.
