Sirs
I am about to take the plunge and get a good scope for 1000 yd shooting,F-Class and High Power). I am looking at getting the Leupold Competition but there are lots fo choices. What do you guys think:
1) What magnification?,I am leaning toward 45X)
2) What cross hair? target or 1/8moa dot?
3) Overall is Leupold the best for this application?
Welcome to shooting Long Range, I hope my input helps.
1) All that you can get, I run Boosted Leupolds from Premier in
50x, plus I use a Gene Davis Booster which puts
me at close to 70x. I have never dialed the power down due
to mirage, I want the target as large as possible. I also
use a mirage shield on the barrel, from under the front
bell of the scope to the muzzel, held in place by velcro.
Made from .025 white shim stock, 2.5"-3" wide, it keeps the
barrel heat from rising up into the line of sight through
the scope. I never use a sun shade any longer either,
after I found out how much heat they trap and the mirage
that comes from it.
2) I have both Fine Target Crosshair,.00045 @ 100 yds.) and
1/8" Dot w/Crosshair, and even a Fine Duplex that works
well for wind hold off. For a true test of what YOU will
like best, you need to look through some scopes and make
that call yourself. I used a Nightforce 12x-42x BR with the
CH-3 reticle for 1 season, it has a Fine Crosshair and
floating .032" Dot, I would lose it on the target as
it was just too small. My main F-Class Scope has a
Premier Target Croshair with 2 Horizontal lines with
16 moa built in. The Sightron 8x-32x-56 has a .250 Dot
which to me is too large and more than covers the X on
the Target.
3) IMHO Leupold, Nightforce, or Sightron,if you can find one)
would all work well for you. It's true that the Leupold
45x is limited to 38moa af adjustment, but I've seen
them on the Firing Line in use, so they will work.
Nightforce has the advantage of almost double the moa
adjustments, which could be handy if it's windy and you
wouldn't have to hold off as much.
That's my $.02.
