Leupold Mark 5

Looking at one.. curious on what the dials feel like… are they a nice solid click or a little mushy? I have had both experiences with leupold so just thought I would check to see what people think of them

thanks

I recently bought a Mark 5 HD. The dials are good. Solid click - not mushy at all. The clicks are definite and easy to feel, but not as "loud" as my Vortex Viper PST. The Vortex clicks are more "solid" - hard to describe: they take a little more force to turn than the Leupold and I find it easy to overshoot my target setting with the Vortex because it takes more force to turn the knobs. But the Leupold knobs are easy to use. My windage knob is odd - it is under a screw-on cap and hard to see what your setting is. You have to line your eyes parallel to the scope - as if you were looking through the scope but then shift your head and eyes to the right to look down the scope tube. A little weird but doesn't really affect any performance - just different marking system. This is my first Leupold (Vortex usually) and I have only been able to use my scope a couple of times but so far I am very happy with the brightness and function of it.

I own two Mark5s, one of my favorite long range optics for hunting. Mine are 3-18 and have a small footprint compared to other scopes with the same features. Both of mine have solid turrets, they track great. Great scopes, Leupold got it right in the Mark5s IMO.

Have you ever ran a mark 4?

IMO the mark 5 is superior to the Mark 4. Mark 4s are tough, my first one was actually a M3 fixed 6x that I wish I still had. There isn’t much in common between those scopes though. The Mark 5 just seems like an updated version of today’s long range scopes, they are lighter than most, the glass holds it’s own with some of the very best glass out there. The turrets are well thought out. I’m using these for hunting so the capped windage is a plus for me, easy to use zero stop, you don’t get lost in the rotation like you can with some other designs. I do wish they would have used a 34mm tube instead of a 35mm, the 35mm really limits your mounting options. I ended up using Hawkins 35mm rings and they work great, just wish I had more options.

Mk5 is superior to the Mk4 in every tangible way, imo. I still have one Mk4 3.5-10x but only because it's worth more to me on the 22 it sits on than what it would sell for. The turrets on the Mk5 are fantastic. There's only 2 things I don't like about the Mk5, first the windage 0 indicator is in an awkward place and second the illuminated reticles are much thicker than the non-illuminated reticles and that's not really distinguishable without looking through them both. Had I known that I would have saved myself the extra $300 or whatever and got the reticle I really wanted.

Has anyone ever compared the internals of the Mk5/6 with the VX5/6? The Mk's seem to be well liked, and there are a fair amount of complaints about the VX5/6's tracking. I've only owned a VX6 for a year, but it has performed flawlessly in quite a bit of range time.

For me the reason I didn’t look at the vx6 was I wanted a ffp…. I will say when my scope came in I compared it in the shop to a Vx6.. the glass looked the same to me … I liked the click of the mk5 turret better but the 6 was still nice and positive…. The shop said he sells quite a few vx5/6’s and they have all been happy with them…
