Leupold got it right this time!

Just had a chance to check out the new Leupold VX-6 scope. It was a 3X18X50MM with matte finish and a fine duplex cross hair. 30 MM tube, quick focus eyepiece, side parallax adjustment and superb ED Glass. For the guy who wants one scope to cover everything from thick cover to open prairie this glass will fill the bill. The glass is more clear and sharp than any Leupold that I have ever looked through and I have looked through a bunch in my day. It also has the custom dial system which can be matched to your load. The center wire on the fine duplex is very fine for precise aiming at long distances but Leupold does offer a standard duplex for those who shoot in less light or have aging eyesight, such as myself. Clicks are sharp and audible which has generally been the case for Leupold over the years. The scope has been mounted on a custom 300 Win. Mag. Will give more details after shooting. Oh did I mention the scope weighs a mere 20Oz's. Talked to the folks at Leupold 2 years ago told them you guys make a zillion models and styles, when are you going to make one scope that has it all. Well I do believe it has arrived. Now if they will only come out with a 9X54X50 for my Dasher. Fingers crossed.

Chuckhunter, May I ask what the price point was on the scope? I'm happy to hear that Leupold is finally catching up with the times, for far to much time they have been resting on their laurels and charging top prices in the process.

I like leupold, but this one doesn't make sense(like 9/10s of their models).
Why the best glass on a short range point & shoot at best hunting scope?

What would make sense is to introduce better glass in their flagship Mk4 SFP scopes to begin.

But, they still refuse to make a variable with magnification higher than 25x. And, if you want 1/8 moa adjustments your only choice is the Competition Series in 35,40 & 45x.

Nightforce, Sightron and others are happy to provide equally high quality scopes, filling the needs of the buyers.

Agree with fdshuster about the higher mag. scopes but talking strictly for hunting purposes, this is in my opinion is a major step up for a Leupold. Oh yeah, I'm not selling these things, I got rid of most of my Leupolds, years ago and my go to scopes are Kahles and Zeiss but this new Leupy really is better than the others I've had, for sure.

chuckhunter, I'd like to know what your thoughts and findings are after testing it out.I have the Ill. model of the scope still in the wrapper with no time to stretch it out.
I found a dealer that is selling the 3x18x50 for $1160 w/illumination.
Keep us in the know.

fe1, Got to shoot the Leupold last night, click adjustments were very precise and repeatable. My friend has a small shooter supply business and were had to sight the scope in for a customer. Very quick to focus the eyepiece, Parallax was easily removed when we changed from 100 to 300 yds. and back. The thing that was the most noticeable improvement in my opinion, over other Leupold glass, was the low light resolution. We had a small Y-Buck come out approx. 350 yds away right before dark and it stayed right along the timber line and we could easily pick it out, which I know I could not do with any of my older Leupold's. Unless your hunting coyotes beyond dark, I don't think the illuminated reticle necessary. The 3X18 magnification really covers the majority of all hunting, from thick cover to open prairie. I wish I knew the answer as to why Leupold never comes out with a variable scope with a magnification higher than 25X. I know if they would produce this scope in an 8X48 or 9X54 with this quality of glass and a Target dot or super fine reticle, these things would fly of the shelves. Until Leupold figures this out we long range Target shooters will have to keep using the Night Force, Sightrons and March, anybody have any pull with Leupold?

Chuckhunter, Thanks for the review I appreciate it.I just need some time and cooler weather to try it out.

Biggest problem for them in this target market is vortex right now. they nailed with their ffp offerings in this price range. mil/mil or moa/moa and illumation with off settings between each setting so you dont have to go through every setting every time. etc. Im a big leupold fan mostly because of their outstanding service department but vortex has been great as well. Its a start but they need to do way more to convince me to buy their product. unless of course i get a good second hand deal.

A few weeks ago I was shooting a few benches over from the Leupold marketing manager. We had been talking while walking down range and he eventually came over to check out my benchrest rifle. When I found out who he was I told him how much I like Leupold scopes and explained the reason the rifle had a Sightron scope was because Leupold didn't offer a high magnification variable power scope. He said he couldn't say much, but he told me they have 4 variable high power prototype scopes being tested right now. Time will tell if anything come of it.

Otter, the info that you received appears to be correct as I saw in today's daily bulletin that Leupold has produced six VX-6 scopes with a magnification of 7X42 and they are being tested at Raton as we speak. The new scopes have a 334MM bell with zero stops on both windage and elevation. There were no specs released as to weight, length, price point, etc. As I said they are not in production but I'm assuming that if they are well received and show no glitches, they may be right around the corner. Keeping my fingers crossed.

This is correct. They were used at Raton and I believe there was some photos on the daily bulletin.
