Leupold Competition 45 or Nightforce BR 12-42

I want to upgrade my optics and need some good advice. I've narrowed my decision down to these two scopes but I need more input to make the final decision. Can someone tell me which scope will have the best image on a good day the fixed power Leupold or the Nightforce ? Why do I see guys like Sam Hall and Mike Davis using Leupold scopes if the Nightforce is the preferred scope for 600 yards? This scope will be installed on my BAT B action 6mm BR and be used for groundhog shoots and local matches where I do need to be able to change my zero during the match. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

The Nightforce has a theoretical advantage with a 56mm objective. As you noted, competitors are winning with both. I have the following on various rifles.

Nightforce BR 12-42
Leupold 40 Competition
Weaver 36 T-Series
Lyman 25 LWBR (a relic that I have owned 30 years)

All perform well on good days. The Nightforce definitely has an edge on marginal (dark) days. I bought the NF because I thought the variable would enable me to reduce magnification and better handle mirage. After fiddling with it a bit at first, I now never use it and keep it at 42.

I am especially fond of the old Lyman although it shows its age compared to the others. ;)

To answer your original question: I think that a top competitor could win with any of the frequently seen competition scopes. It is important to have confidence in your equipment and know it is dependable. Ask folks with each scope in which you are interested to look through them and inquire about their experience with it. I frequently get this request when shooting the NF. Take it all into consideration and make the decision that is right for you.

I have both scopes and prefer the NF for long range GH shoots. If you check the IBS/NBRSA equipment lists, you will find many competitors have the Leupold. Out to 300 yds., they are fine. Beyond that, you need more power. Another advantage of a variable is that when mirage runs strong, you can power down and make it appear less of a problem.

Thanks guys for the info. I think at this point I will order a Nightforce BR 12-42x56 with the NP-2DD reticle. Now where is the best place to order this scope? Thanks again, Benjamin

First you have to find one in stock with the reticle you want. In general I find Bruno's Shooter Supply has the best prices. He guarantees to meet or beat any legitimate price on Nightforce scopes. He currently is listing the BR 12-42x56 NP-2DD reticle IN STOCK so I'd grab it now If you can.
