Lets talk 6PPC and H322

I have a Hall actioned 6PPC and about 7 lbs of H322, the gun was built by James Messer in 1989 or so (maybe 88) for me, was never shot until about 3 months ago when I decided to get back into benchrest. Looked at my old data and it shows H322 was the load so I purchased 8 lbs but now I read about different powders being more stable (Yes I know I should have done my research BEFORE I bought). Am I going to have to load at the matches to be competitive? Mr. John Beauchamp and I took the gun out yesterday and after working on load I was able to shoot a 64 (UBR) round. I know this won't win but for me and just getting back in I'm really happy with it but what goes on from here? I know most guys that have the 30BR are preloaded but what about the 6PPC guys? When you go to a match you don't have time to load test so what am I missing? Help an old guy out ;-)

Not many preload and nobody has used 322 since n133 came out. You can go out preloaded and have fun though. You can get some xbr8208 and do pretty well for an easy to find powder

i have done ok with about 28.7g and a 66g naked flat base if that helps. 2 out of the last 3 comps anyway. if your load is in tune I think you would still be competitive. A tuner broadens your sweet spot, and you should be able to get good consistent groups with it.

I’m interested in some tips, too. I’m setting up for some serious shooting of the 6ppc this season. I bought some H322 and V133. Both powders have shot well but some guys here said the H322 was less fussy for a “preloader”, which I am. I hope some experienced guys will share. Lord knows I need the help.

Me too brother! Me too.

The 322 is not even close to being stable. It was the worst powder to go out of tune. If at a match you missed it headed out of tune you might get away with a .750 at 100. It blew up bad real quick. If you want to preload lt32 is what i have had the best luck with, n133 is next and those 2 are the only ones id consider

64 is nothing to sneeze at. Post 4 targets like that and you're in the running with a 252. H322 will work. I would load and or test at the range you're shooting. Load the night before so you have a fresh batch for the match.

Are you referring to the old surplus 322 or the Extreme? I just checked. The Extreme started in 1990.

Frankie,
You should be fine with 322. I don't often disagree with Dusty, but I can tell you that all the PPC shooters in our area in UBR matches are shooting LT 32 (one shoots LT 30). If I had picked up 8 lbs of 322 I would plan to use it. You probably wouldn't gain anything trying to load at the match until you are much more familiar with tuning on the fly. In all the matches in out general area I only know of one shooter who loads at the match and he didn't last time. In the future you might consider a tuner, but not really necessary now. Better to concentrate on the flags. One other thing, ignore the weather forecast :D

Two years ago when I got my first PPC, I also got a good deal on modern day H322. It shot fine and I burned a lot of of that powder that year. Never shot a group like Dusty indicated. Not even close and I shot that stuff as a novice in cold and hot weather. As said, I don't think it gets used much anymore in SR group shooting, but I got some word out of Kansas that some guys are back to using it.

I still try to use some often since i have so much of it but not at an important match. Around 97-98 is when most stopped using it

You do not identify the barrel twist or manufacturer. If it is a 14 tw, with 65 - 70 gr bullets, try LT32. You might ike it.
Honestly I have no idea of barrel maker (remember this was back in 88 or 89) I believe it to be a Schneider? as I had a second 6PPC that James built and I had sold and still have a new barrel for it, it is a 14 twist.

This is the new extreme.
I assumed that yours is, but that is good information. What I was really asking was whether the experiences that Dusty wrote about were with the Extreme or the the older surplus powder. Similarly, I have read about people's experiences with the older versions of 4198 and I think that that reputation may be keeping shooters from trying the Extreme H4198.

I remember when the extreme came out. Most of my experience was with extreme from 1999 or around there. I have older and newer as well. Works good for my 223 and 6x45 for kids deer hunting. I hope everybody uses it for br tho- please go buy all you can

Id bet on shilen. I shot with them at that time.
My take on the 322- use what you like, but even being able to buy it at every store in every town- the easiest ppc powder to buy by far- ive still not seen it on a match report since 1999 or so. But test it out and have fun is the main thing.

I have a Kreiger barreled Hall 6ppc and the guys that mentored me told me I could never as a newbie keep VV133 in tune use the H322. Were they pulling my leg? I have shoot several 5 shot groups in the 0s. But I do see it when its hotter open up some?? When I was buying powder the LTs hadn't been invented and 133 was impossible to find.

Thanks, I'm in it for the fun 'cause you guys won't pay me for my looks or shooting ability!
