Hi fellas,
I am in the process of gathering the parts to build a couple of 6brx 1000 yard BR rifles. One rifle is already built just have to screw on the new barrel, it has a Stiller Diamond back action and Shehane MBR stock the other rifle is a Savage target action don't know what stock yet? any suggestions on finished barrel lengths. Oh shooting 105s-107 gr bullets, thanks in advance for you help.

Answer: In paragraph two, of article two on the 6 BRX, it looks as if 31 inches is one option: http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/6mmbrimproved/

If your shooting 1000yds and want to get the most velocity possible, I would tend to believe that 29" to 31" would be a good range to start with. I would personally go as long as I could, within reason, and try to wring all the velocity possible from it. Maybe even stretching it out to 32", although 30" would likely be long enough.

Just remember Wayne, you can always just TIG a few more inches on the end if it proves to be too short! ;) :D

Seriously though, if you go with a 32" and it is too long, you can always have an inch or two lopped off the end. As well as it will leave you some room to cut off the old chamber and rechamber it once it start to get tired. Even if it's past it's "competitive prime", it would likely still make a decent varmint barrel.

Good luck, keep me posted on how it goes.

Kenny

PS: What ended up happening with the P-1000? Did you order a Diamondback instead, or already have it? I was curious as to how the P-1000 was going to do.

Kenny,
I have both the p-1000 and a diamond back I haven't built anything on the p-1000 yet, but have a 6*284 barrel on the Diamond back and am thinking of doing a switch barrel with it and use the p-1000 for a 6MMAI project I have in the works. Barrels are very hard to get on short notice right now I called Krieger and they have very little in 6mm and nothing I am interested in. MidwayUSA has one 28" HV Krieger in 1:8 Bruno's had 8 29" Kriegers in stock in the #17 HV 1:8 this morning they were down to 7 and as of five minutes ago there down to 5 in stock because I bought two of them. I wanted 31" or 32" but nobody had them and I don't want to wait until june to get them. Hopefully I will get to utilize 28-28.5" of the 29 " blank. I will keep looking for some longer blanks. Thanks guy's for the advice.

bozo699,
how long are your barrels to start with? I did a long barrel once, and did not get much out of it. I don't pay extra any more. I just had a barrel done, by Mike Davis. He and other top 600 yds benchrest shooter are saying that 26 " is the best for accuracy, so I went with a 26". I shot 3 IBS 600 records with a 27", one being a LG group 0.749" in 2007 I think the shorter barrels shoot better. Speed will not get you accuracy. My best accuracy is around 2975 F/S

I'm with Mark. I don't/won't pay for more that a 29" blank which will finish at 28" for my Dashers. Depending on other components, your weight limit may not let you use more than that for a 17# LG. Plus they can start to get nose heavy in the bags.

I run mine at 3060 out of the 28's with 105's for 600 or 1000.

Mark......Alf,
I am totally open to suggestion on barrel length.
I was told by a accomplished and record holding 1000yard Dasher shooter to make my 6brx barrel 28.5" but I wanted to get other opinions from you other accomplished shooters and I totally appreciate your opinions and advice. Mark to answer your question I was looking for a 30 or 31" blank but had to settle on a 29" but after reading your posts 29 sounds like it will be long enough. Thanks again for all of your help guy's I would still like to hear any other thoughts anyone might have that would aide me in being competitive with these rifles.

Wayne,

I have told the smith, just to leave it as long as they can. I did this last barrel to 26" per Mike's input, he just did a 6BR 26"other shooters results.

I'm all in also. Having a 600 yard BRX built with barrel in 25-26 inch range. Better balance? Most ballistic programs will show maybe a 25 fps drop per inch of barrel shortening. The length may be important at 1000yds moreso from a bullet-powder combination to maintain supersonic velocity at 1000yds so checking a ballistics program may help you in deciding barrel length.

Mike

Amey from Brunos called me today with a couple of questions, and my barrels are on there way so I hope I can make something shoot with the 29" blanks that are in route as I speak. If not I can always use them for varmint rifles, I will continue to look for some 30 or 31"tubes.
Thanks again fellas for all your help, I can't wait to get them put together and spring to come so my son and I can spend his last summer @ home doing what we love to do together, SHOOTING :D
