LE Wilson Fl bushing sizing die question

Hi guys just got my Wilson 7saum fl bushing sizing die, and i have a question about setting it up.
The die has a decaping rod with knurled nut on its stem to adjust height.
Do I have to have to have the stem inserted while using the die with bushing or can I remove that assembly and just hand tighten the top nut of the die?
Thank you,
Elmer

Stem can be removed from the cap, no reason to leave it in if you don't need to expand the neck after sizing it down with the bushing. Easy peasy!

It's just a decaping rod.
Without going to check my dies I believe if you remove rod you also lose the knurled nut.
The knurled nut tightens down on the bushing.
Loosen nut, screw decapping rod all the way up, tighten nut.
Also use appropriate stem with flash hole diameter.

This one is a Bra die so there's that' nevertheless once I remove the De caper and knurled nut I have to back the lock nut off completely leaving a bit if a rattling bushing so I guess that's ok..

Is there any reason that you could not just drop the loose knurled nut on top of the bushing before threading in the plug? If the ends of the nut are parallel and true, I do not think that it would be a problem.

You probably could without issues but there's the stacking of variable thing we all try to avoid, the rattling is significant enough to say a portion of the neck may not get sized

The vertical space above the bushing would be the same, as would the adjustment of the die plug (piece threaded into the top of the die) whether or not the decapping rod was in place, as long as the knurled nut was in between the plug and the bushing.

So with the stem gone and the knurled nut placed on top of the bushing and the plug screwed in the die should work the same?
Thanks so far guys.

Try sizing a couple few piece of brass 2 ways.
1 with decaping stem raised all the way and locked down.
This will remove any slop between knurled inner nut and outer adjuster. What @SPJ referenced.
Next size a few pieces with decaping stem removed.
Measure neck run out and amount of neck sized.
That will be your answer.
I leave my stems in place in the upper most position, but that's me.

I have one and I leave the decapping pin in, even though I I use a universal decapping die. It doesn’t get in the way. I have different bushings for the two different brands of brass I’m using.
