Lathe as a bullet puller

Loaded about 250 new PRVI PPU 22 Hornet cases and fireforming to 22 K Hornet has resulted in split shoulders. All other Hornady, Wichester, RP cases are fireforming without issue. These PPU cases were loaded with 12.0 of Lil' Gun and various bullets I had laying around for years. Also crimped with a Lee factory crimp die. RCBS kinetic bullet puller couldn't budge them. Tried RCBS collet bullet puller but in a Coax press, even with a toggle link handle, wouldn't work. So..................

The kinetic will prolly work if you first set your seating die a scootch down and break them loose. jd

These had only been seated for a couple of hours, so they hadn't case neck welded. I had to use Knipex pliars in the Coax and bullets destroyed and still a bear to pull using press. In the lathe, I've done > 100 in about 1-1/2 hours and that was cleaning powder out of cases as well. The Lil'gun is like a plastic when it;s compressed. Takes a drill bit to clean it out.

Wow  Who'da thought.
My next advice was gonna be to apply a little heat with a torch --- naahh, better forget that one. jd

Nice bit of "inginudity" ! The lathe is indeed the "King" of machine tools!

good idea- what did you use for the piece the shell holder fits in?

I made it out of 12L14, top is close to 7/8" OD, bottom piece is just under 5/8" OD (my drill chuck holds 5/8"). Kind of like the top of a single stage press (ie. Rockchucker, Pacifi, etc). It's threaded internally and has a taper that holds the shellholder in place. Very handy when you want to turn necks or trim cases in the lathe. @jackieschmidt has a video somewhere.

thanks for the info-- i like how u made that- some guys use a ram out of a single stage press for that

After pulling all the bullets, annealed the cases and reloaded with 11.0 grains Lil'gun. Used the pulled bullets other than the 36 grain Varmint grenades, they didn't survive pulling. Felt like they were glued in. No split cases on next fire-forming round to K-Hornet. So new PRVI PPU cases are not annealed enough.
