late night window shopping

Last night I started pricing out how much it would cost to build a new 6.5 grendel upper for my ar-15. I got it down to 725 but then i realized I could just buy a Howa mini and stock for around 550. Of course, then I thought for 50 dollars more I could get a 6.5 creedmoor and have a lot more power and reach. So I looked at what the price difference was between the grendel and the creedmoor cause the smaller case has to be cheaper, right?

Well, not counting wolf steel ammo, cheapest price per round for the grendel was around .8 (hornady 123 sst) and cheapest price per round for the creedmoor was around .9 (hornady 140 hpbt). Which makes me wonder what advantage does the grendel have?

Midsouth had some 129 grain Hornady American Whitetail for $17 a box. It is very accurate in my Tikka CTR as in 5 shots in the 0.4 range; plus I am not a very good shot. I can't imagine wanting a Grendel. Now I could definitely have fun with an AR 10 small frame in Creedmoor.

You don't offer any suggestions as to how this rifle will be used and for what purpose.

For any reason, I have no use for a Grendel.

But for nearly any endeavor, from hunting to target shooting, the 6.5 Creedmoor is a superb selection. There is excellent factory ammunition but even better, we now have Lapua brass for those of us who reload.

The biggest difference occurs with using an AR-style platform. The Grendel works through an AR15 while it takes an AR10 to run the Creedmoor.

Regards.

From what I understand the grendal was designed and submitted for government testing in hopes that it would be picked to replace the 7.62 NATO round. While it has very similar ballistics its advantage comes from the size of the cartridge. It can be shot from a smaller platform. It has not been accepted as a replacement for the 7.62 NATO round. The creedmore is ballisticly a superior round and has finally taken a noticeable amount of the market share. Utilizing the ballistic advantage of the 6.5 mm bullet it will out perform a 7.62 NATO round.

mainly for target shooting but with some thoughts of hunting in mind too. Also, I don't reload hence the concern about price per round.

Oh please don't be running down our little cartridge.

The grendel and its wildcat cousins is the best you are going to get out of.the AR15.platform. For some reason the AR 15 platform is America's rifle. Go to the gun range. 90% of what you see at public gun ranges is black rifles.

Sure there are 100's of more powerful cartridges than the grendel but the grendel shooting the high BC 6.5 bullets hangs in there with them at the long.ranges. it is fun to shoot, low recoiling, accurate and relatively inexpensive to shoot. If you have an AR15 you need a grendel upper.

Now that said.i wouldn't chamber a bolt gun for it. Much too many better choices. I have thought about chambering a barrel for the grendel necked out.to 30 cal for a.short range benchrest barrel for my switchbarrel though.

That makes sense. And in your situation, the 6.5 Creedmoor would be my choice for either a Bolt Action rifle or an AR10 platform. Some of the best builders are engaged in creating extremely accurate semi-auto rifles on the AR10 platform. Now, to be clear, these are not F-Class-type accurate or 1,000 Yard Benchrest accurate but for competitions such as PRS, they are perfect. In fact, given the startup of the PRS gas gun competitions, you will see a push for better accuracy in the long run.

If it was hunting only, you could run the AR15 and the Grendel or even the 6.8 SPC.

Here is a video demonstrating the accuracy potential of the AR10 platform:

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I like the idea of the grendel a lot. Again, since price per round is a factor, I would be fine with it if it cost 50-60 cents a round (like the PPU ammo used to).

I was originally looking to get the upper before my wallet started questioning my decisions

Haha yeah I started looking into an AR-10 as a modular way to have a 6mm match gun/coyote gun, and hunting gun in 6.5 or above, and maybe a ftr 308 rifle. But..... yeah

Ar10 is.so.heavy

But you can do the.same.thing.with an AR15 with hbars. I built mine with an 18" JP lightweight barrel. 7.5# without optics. It is actually a practical rifle.rather than a bench queen like most of my rifles.

I have a 6mm ar turbo built on an AR 15 frame that would fit your bill perfectly. It is a grendel case necked down to 6mm. Pushes berger 105s 2850 pretty easily. On a good day it is a quarter in gun but a solid 1/2 gun.

yeah i think the weight of the AR-10 is what scares me the most (12 lbs ohhh how scary:p) but I was thinking a 24 inch x-caliber in their sporter weight and a light stock might not be too bad.

The thing about the 6mms is that if I do hunt with it than black bear would be a potential target and while I'm sure it would kill a black bear i'd be more comfortable with a 6.5
