Large ring k98 German Mauser

Well I came across this mod. 98 Mauser action price was right now looking for ideas for a build and have
some questions. How's the best way or most popular way to modify the bolt handle for scope
clearance? I plan to buy the upgraded safety tang and a timney trigger group. What are my options for
a barrel?

Are you looking for pre-fit barrels? If so check Midway USA, Brownells, or you can contact ER Shaw. Any one of these will have pre threaded barrels for a large ring action. Just be aware that they will be short chambered and will need to be fit and finish chambered.

The best way to do the bolt handle, is to remove it and weld a new one in it's place..
It can be bent, but it looks strange that way.

You can get a plethora of custom barrels from various manufacturers, however, people have noted the good shooting
of the low cost barrels offered from Midway. Above link shows how to properly install and true them.

Most barrel manufacturers will have a Mauser option, or you can call them up for info.

Thanks guys I knew I could count on y'all for help. Anybody familiar with
the 6mm x 284 I was thinking on it for the chamber

Rem6br,

That action is a waste of time and money.

However if your young and have machinery ability and say a back up of a senior tool maker or gunsmith then play around with it.

We did that back in the 50's when those guns were $10 each complete.

Also a wildcat such as you mention is just fun, that's all.

About the same results can be had with standard cartridges.

I like 'mausers' also and even have one somebody must have paid a fortune to 'sporterize'. The commercial 'FN' actions are superior in every way.

Their metallurgy, heat treatment, quality control inspection, proofs, machine quality and ease of resale are superior.

I never liked those forend tips and stock style either.

Hope you are warm in Texas:

I drove by the range today and nobody was outside shooting. Too cold.

Inside where we have 50' for rimfire a couple of guys were talking.

I would not say a Mauser 98 is necessarily a waste of time and money. You need to remember that many of us Cut our teeth on these actions. It is a great low cost way to obtain an action to play with. I fully agree that there are many better actions out there, and these sure won't be seen winning any competitions.

I have a 7mm-08 custom built on a BRNO Mauser 98 action. I have a light weight Shilen barrel on it, custom bent bolt, Buehler safety, a Timney trigger and Lee Six sporter stock; Burris mini 2-7 on top. I have shot many deer with it. I can hold groups to an inch with it. But the heavy 98 action was not what I wanted.

You first need to research and find out whether your 98 action is strong enuf for a high velocity cartridge. Not all of them were, and with anything above 40K psi, some would blow up.

Bending a bolt or welding a new one is gunsmith work. A new barrel in any caliber would need to be headspaced correctly and that is also a gunsmith job. So you need to consider everything including the costs before you begin this project. Talk to a good smith first.

The truth is you would be saving money to sell it and buy a good factory rifle in caliber of your choice.

Well I'm all for saving money for sure so if it will have accuracy problems I won't build it
I wouldn't be satisfied with if it wouldn't shoot 1/2" moa. I guess I have been spoiled by the 6ppc
and 6br. The mauser action was givin to me by a friend so I considered building a rifle around it
I will take the advice and talk it over with my smith

I have a FN commercial bolt with a magbolt face (bent handle) I would sell for $750. It comes with a barrel (7mm Rem Mag), stock, scope and mounts, and a FN commercial reciever.
