Lapua Scenars

Hey,
I have heard that the Lalua Scenars shoot very well. Have any of you all shoot any game with them? Groundhogs or Deer? I am thinking of buliding a 6.5 STW and seriously looking at the 139 Scenar. I like the .6 BC. What do you all think?

People, I agree. I have shot some whitetails with SMK's that just simply kept going. I was just wondering if the Lapua's were any tougher. Which I guess that the berger 140 VLD would be a better bet since they are now selling them as hunting bullets.
Thanks,
Croberts

I read a postt over on LRH.com about Scenars and hunting. The guy doing the bullet tests had the bullet rated as an armor piercing round. He said it penetrated his gong at 200 yards or something like that and failed to expand in his tests on media. That is all from memory, but I think the jist is correct.

I have used SMKs and AMAX on deer. I do not plan on using the AMAX again as the tissue damage was too extreme. I will stick with the SMKs for years to come. Bullet placement is paramount in all shooting circumstances from self-defense to peper punching and that includes hunting.

PS I typed this without my contacts and cannot read it so I apologize for any and all typos.

I've shot the 155g Lapua's on antelope at 200-425yds, white tailed deer at 30yds-450yds, prairie dogs at 100-600yds and they do a pretty dang good job. The large animals that i've shot, went down in their tracks, with no need for a follow up. I also use the 155g lapua as my all around coyote bullet of choice, it does a nice pin hole in and about the size of a quarter or fifty cent piece on the way out depending on if you hit a heavy bone, shoulder blade, etc).

You can always give them a try. they do very well.

Croberts,

You might stop by over at www.longrangehunting.com . These gentlemen specialize in just that. Many have documented kills at 700-800 yards plus using big guns and big match bullets. Many have posted recovered bullets, game taken with those bullets and the results. I have found it somewhat surprising.

Now the question begs, will the scenars expand in something the size of a groundhog? I'm not exactly sure what the answer is to that but my guess is probably not unless you are really cooking them. However, a dead groundhog is a dead groundhog. You may see an increase in crawl-offs and such, especially at the ranges I know you will be shooting them. I think the better choice would definitely be the 140gr Hornady A-max's. I have seen 105's in a 6mm do some absurd things to groundhogs. I imagine the 140's will be no different.

We'll have to get together soon as it's getting to be that time of year.

deadeye_ruck,

There are quite a few crawloffs with prairie dogs at all ranges, simply because there is a very small amount of body tissue and bone to open the bullets, basically like a fmj. I'd assume they would be similar to groundhogs.

I agree with groundhogs, pdogs and other small rodents, there are a lot of better bullets that are on the market to fit the niche.

I've never opened up my bullets, but just from general knowledge, they should be basically the same. As you have just pointed out.

I've used both 168g smk and 175g smk to shoot deer, and have switched over to 155 lapua just for the ballistics and windage that they have. They all will kill and do a great job on deer, antelope, coyote size animals. My go to coyote rig is my 308 with 155g lapua over my 243 or 22-250. At longer range they do an excellent job.

The A-max is basically the same as a hpbt but with a plastic tip for a better bc.

Just my opinion. I don't pretend to be all knowing, i'm sure there are many other people that could answer this question with better info.

i have excellent results with 100SMK in .25-06,and 90 scenars in .243 on deer and groundhogs.thumbs up to them both.
i am currently running 123 scenars in 6.5x47 lapua and ran them to 500yds on groundhogs.i got every one of them where they stood, but there was less damage than the previous.i will have to run them more on groundhogs before deciding on whitetails with them.

best advice is don't to be afraid to try them for yourself.

One of the guys on Nodakoutdoors shot a doe the long way at 500 or 600 and it did not open at all. He posted a pic of the recoverd Sceener. It was bent as the bullet did tumble. I have not been able to recover any of my bullets. I always get pass threw or they fully come apart. That is using different bullets.

The Lapua Scenar's are used in Europe for deer/stag with great success,

I'd say there's more hunters with Scenars in US than Europe. Europe is very, let's say conservative, when it comes to hunting. At least continental Europe, not sure about those Brits...
