Lapua Scenar 'L' 105gr 6mm Measurements

Hey guys, I got a box of the new "tight production tolerance" 105gr Lapua Scenar L bullets. I pulled 20 out of the box at random and measured them base to ogive using a Hornady comparator on calipers.

Then I weighed all 20 with an RCBS digital scale. Three bullets weighed 105.2 grains, the remaining 17 weighed 105.3 grains. NOTE: this is NOT a lab-grade scale. However, I did calibrate the scale and weighed all bullets twice and I weighed the 3 lighter-weight bullets 4 times to try to eliminate error. Overall, I would say these are some of the most consistent factory bullets I've ever measured. I don't have a really good concentricity checker or I would give you that data too.

Lapua plans to extend the "L" production program to all Scenar bullets in all calibers eventually.

for almost $0.50 per bullet. I better not need to spend ANY time sorting, trimming, pointing, etc...

I hate to be 'that guy' to complain about price, but these BR bullets are getting expensive! (Yeah, I understand the cost of the materials and production, but 50cents a shot is getting up there, considering these are 6mm 105gr bullets) I think most BR shooters would sort these bullets anyway, based on the editors results after only looking at 20 of them. The numbers are very impressive, but most BR shooters (long-range especially) wouldn't want a bullet with an ogive that's .002" short loaded in one of their "record rounds." Would it create a flyer that results in a miss that ultimatley loses the match? Maybe not, but the BR game is just as much mental as it is mechanical. Just knowing that you might have a round that isn't quite the same as the others may deter BR shooters from buying these things. They could get better consistency if they sort cheaper bullets, including the cheaper (regular) version of the Scenar's. About the only benefit with the "L" bullets is "more assurance" that the jackets and cores are concentric.

Bottom line, I think this is a great product, and I'm glad to see Lapua putting the effort forth to meet our needs for accuracy. I just can't justify the cost to myself.

.002 variance base to ogive (on the one bullet) is still very good. I've sorted bullets from other makers and seen base-to-ogive variances up to .025" (twenty-five thousandths). I try to hold .002 on loaded rounds, measuring base of case to bullet ogive, and that's AFTER sorting the bullets. Whether a reader would choose to sort these or not is up to them, but I think if you sorted most other match bullets you would see a significantly larger spread. Maybe other members can offer their data for other bullets by comparison....

I'm currently using the Berger 105's, and I sort then by .001" increments. It's common to see one or more .005" longer OR shorter bullets out of the same box of 100. In a few cases, I've seen some extreme's, as you've noted.

I remember running into a guy at the World Open last year (Williamsport) who was making CNC-machined 6mm 100gr (maybe they were 95's?) bullets for around $50 per 100. If I was considering these "L" Scenar's, I'd consider skipping them, and going straight to the CNC'd bullets.

I'm all for paying extra for bullets that you can just take out of the box and seat, I have spent many, many hours sorting/weighing bullets, and these 105 Scenars are my favorite. Kudo's to Lapua to where I can spend more time shooting and less time at the load bench.

I have acquired 3 different 'flavors' of the Cutting Edge 100gr .243 bullet. As soon as the weather warms up here in Montana (June or July) I am going to be out testing these in my 6 DASHER and my 6SLR. I am looking to start with the new Hodgdon SuperFormance in the 6SLR and 8208 in my DASHER. I received a little cheat sheet from the manufacturer so I think I have a good starting point for these bullets. I will post results on the reloading forum as soon as I have them.

Blue Eyed Bear - please do report back with your findings! They have some intriguing bullet designs that are only found on large projectiles, like compression rings, and bore-riding portions of 'bearing surface.' I don't believe anyone would question how accurate a 20mm Vulcan is at 3000 yards, with it's bore-riding bullets wearing compression rings. I think it's interesting that Cutting Edge is applying that to small caliber bullets.

I weight sorted 100 Lapua Scenar-L's, and the weight spread was 0.2 grains. Now, most were dead on, but 0.2 was the "worst", now, we all have to admit that that is very consistent!

I shoot F-Class, and I would have no problems what so ever shooting these bullets right out of the box, they are absolutely incredibly consistent!
