Lapua, Nosler, Norma ?

7RSAUM:
Nosler, or Norma, which brass would you get the most reloads out of ? I'm not sure on the load yet, I was running a little on the stout side with my Rem brass. I also have a .284 Shehane I need to get brass for, so the same question would apply to the Shehane. Lapua, Nosler, or Norma ?

Thanks for any info,
Don Dunlap

As far as I know Lapua does not have 7RSAUM brass (or any brass that could be used to readily make it) so that's off the table.

You could take Lapua 6.5 x 284 brass to make 284 Win brass (to make 284 Shehane brass), but you would need to neck turn it after you neck it up to 7mm, because if you neck up Lapua 6.5x284 brass to 7mm you will absolutely have a donut bulge at the base of the neck and shoulder (since the shoulder metal of the 6.5x284 brass is thicker than the neck metal by a good bit and when you neck it up, part of the shoulder metal becomes the neck.

You are right Robert, I knew that, just had a moment while writing the post. I'll go back and correct it. I just got back on here and seen 250 ct. box of .284 Win. brass that just got bought. ::)

Thanks,
Don Dunlap

I thought the Nosler brass seemed a little soft for my 300RUM. I went with Rem for that rifle. The case prep was a whole lot more than with the Nosler but they seem to be holding up a bit better. I use Lapua for a 243AI and a 300 Lapua and am VERY happy with it.

Or is it just that American brass is that bad ?

Who knows what is or isn't made in America anymore. Look at all the American companies, like the powder companies, that don't sell a single granule of "American Made" powder (unless you want to include Canada because they're on the North American continent.)

for those necking down and neck turning 300 saum brass to make 7mm saum how is that working out compared to the rem? I read that it was slighly lower in capacity and loads had to be backed off vs the rem is this actually the case? Also you always here that norma brass is softer (and presumably exhibits signs of pressure earlier?) has this actually proven to be the case? rem 7 saum brass is unobtanium out here in NZ so looking at getting some norma 300 saum

Any brass with hot loads is not going to hold up as long as mild loads.

This is a well known fact. I've ran some numbers on Q.L. between the Shehane and the 7RASUM and at this time believe it isn't worth having both, accept to have a decent back up. Then again this is worth alot... Thanks for the info guys.
