Lapua bullets vs ?????

UPDATE 1/26/2006: Powder Valley has resumed carrying Lapua Products and Brass and Bullets are now in stock, according to Bryan.

As many of you already know Powder Valley has discontinued the program we had with the Lapua importer. At this time we are evaluating what direction we will be going in the future.

Lapua bullets are a great bullet. But, as we have learned over a very tough 18 months we can not lend our reputation to rely on their customer service. Believe me, we have tried everything possible to make this work. When a customer places an order and we can't tell him whether his order has shipped or if the importer is out of stock for 10 days the customer doesn't understand why we can't tell him. When customers are being told 5 different times over a 6 month period their bullets would ship in 3-4 weeks the customer doesn't know who is yanking his chain. And I don't blame the customer. I would have the same questions also.

After careful evaluation we have decided we have two options.

1) Attempt to work with the importer to adequately stock bullets at our warehouse rather than shipping direct from their warehouse. This would require us to pay shipping to our warehouse which would slightly increase the bullet prices. But, if successful, at the very least you could look at our website and know exactly what was in stock and have the great customer service you have come to know and expect from Powder Valley. And as always. You can expect the prices to beat the heck out of any competitor.
2) Go with a different brand of bullet. We have been in contact with other match grade bullet manufacturers. The question is Who?

So, we have decided to go out on a limb and do things a little bit unorthodoxed. I am posing the question to you, our customers. What would you prefer we do?

I like and use the 105 Lapua and would prefer to be able to purchase them directly from PVI, even at a higher cost. They are worth the hassle as they outperform the others by a good margin.

Berger, Lapua, and Sierra, among the majors) all have great 6mm bullets that have set records. And many people have had impressive results with the Hornady 105s.

I love the Lapua Scenars and hope you can retain that product line in some fashion, but I'm sure your customers would like to be able to buy Bergers and Sierras too. The pending 600-yard world record of .860" was set with coated Berger 105s:

The Lapuas are very consistent in weight and dimensions. And German and Flatlander can testify to how well they shoot.

The simple fact of the matter is that the long standing importer, K-P, has done a miserable job of it. After the email addresses of several senior personnel at Lapua were posted on another web site, with their permission) they were astonished to hear from numerous people about the problems with the importer and quality control problems with brass, and complaints) which the importer never bothered to report to them. Likewise, the importer has done very little to promote the business end of selling Lapua's products in the U.S.

It would be easy to say that K-P simply does not care, but that would presume that they were capable of caring.

If it comes down to having to deal with K-P or not carrying Lapua products it is easy to see how a business would simply not carry Lapua products. Unless Lapua fundamentally changes their business model in the U.S. it is likely that they will see continued decline. Lapua would be better off without K-P...and so would we.

stock Lapua, they may be in a pain the the ass, but the brass is the best. The bullets are great also. I would also like you to stock berger and Sierra as well.

but think how much more they could sell, if you could get Lapua products when ever you wanted to order some. 6.5x284 brass is like gold, you better get it while it's available, not just when you need it, or you will have to wait

I'd say stock 'em. Generally speaking your prices were among the lowest around, w/ I think E. Arthur Brown Co.,www.eabco.com) coming in close behind. A slight price hike may still keep you in that lead spot, and you list a bigger selection of powder/primer etc. so even if the prices were equal, for most people the tendency would be to buy everything at one time if possible, rather than be stuck waiting on one component to come from one place, another from somewhere else... etc.

YMMV,

Monte

Thanks for all of the feedback. We will make a decision by the first of the year.

I hope you all have a Merry Christmas.

My alternatives would be Berger and then see if you could lock down a custom bullet maker like Clinch River or Catturucci, spelling) for a run of bullets.

Norma bullets are less than impressive QC wise. Seirra's are sold everywhere.

I wouldn't mind seeing a few high BC target type bullets from custom shops. Maybe a limited time trial run on a few and the one that has the best response keep on.

I don't know I like the Lapua scenars quite a bit.

RHINOUT!

Good news.

I appreciate the feedback on the forum and all of the emails.

We have decided to continue with a limited line of the Lapua bullets and brass. We will begin stocking these items in our warehouse in late February/early March. Keep an eye on our website. If you need to place an order for shipment when our initial stock arrives feel free to do so. We will be listing the items we will be carrying on our website in a few days.
