Lapua Brass ?????

I have a new Gold Box of 222, that has burrs or rough spots
in the grove that wont let these cases slide freely in/out of the
shell holder. I thought originally it was the shell holder, but the same
situation exists w/my priming tool w/another shell holder. Its nothing
you can see or feel, but its sure a pain when annealing, when you need
that hot case to fall out of the shell holder and it wont. Any one ever have this???
Any solutions??? LDS

Few years ago, I had it with several pieces of new 6BR brass. I just took a small strip of garnet paper and twisted the rims on it until the burrs smoothed out.

Just had a similar problem using a K&M shell holder for a trimmer for torch annealing. It doesn't look like it would matter but the shell holder has to be well centered in the opening to the outer holder.

Seconds count when annealing so I always started by setting up a large clock right behind the flame for an accurate count, dipping the neck in water after 6 1/2 seconds (.223) while it was still on the shellholder, before discoloration traveled too far down the shoulder.

But I was never able to soften the necks more than once like others claimed to be able to do. In my case I've had much better luck using an undersized neck to prolong brass life.

Uh, not sure what you are using for a heat source but with a standard propane torch my .223 brass only takes 3.5 seconds...Perhaps I am using a hotter part of the flame.

This is GOLD BOX 22, there is no replacement by the MFG as to brass thickness. Not that my shooting ability would know any difference.
My annealer is the AMP so there is no time factor. The cases just wont fall out of the shell holder as they should. Can you say "HOT"???? LDS

There is something about this forum that that makes it difficult to talk about shell holders. For years I have explained to reloaders there are shell holders that fit like a hand me down shirt, the shell holder only fits where it touches. The problem with that statement has to do with having no reloaders that grew up warring hand me down shirts. And then there are shell holders that fit and no one understands why a company would make shell holders that fit. I have both, I have shell holders that only fit where they touch and I have shell holders that fit; there are times I have to use a small ball peen hammer to install cases into the shell holders that are a 'too good' of a fit.

I talked about a shop call, a builder of bench rest type rifles was having trouble forming cases for one of his wildcat builds. He asked me to bring the other #4 RCBS shell holder for magnums. Instead of bringing the other #4 shell holder I brought the gasket cutting ball peen hammer. He should have had .010" clearance between the deck of the shell holder and case head but the cases he was trying to form had been hammered with heavy loads and it was no surprise to me the cases were in sets of 20 cases in 2 boxes. He has two lathes so I offered to 'fix' 40 of his cases with upset case heads.

I can say hot but I do not use a shell holder, I can only guess reloaders started using shell holders when they discovered the case head gets hot when they attempted to hold the case in their hands. Again, we do not know what shell holder is being used.

See @fguffey is keeping up with technology well..... (NOT)
Now he's all confused with the use of a shell holder for an induction; AMP annealer.
We all need to get back to the 50's, so we can be as modern as fguffey

That is Priceless..... better then the cartoons !.!.!

Maybe get another shell holder...take a few thousandths off the top, widen the mouth if needed, and dedicate its use for annealing.

Contact Lapua and explain the problem to them. They are good people and will help you if they can.

There are differences between shellholders, even from the same company. I have some where cases fit loose and some where they are tight. I woukd try and find one to fit, especially for your AMP. They need to fall out. Matt

The case when annealed absolutely needs to fall out. I would consider it just a tight shell holder, if the one on my Lee priming tool wasn't having the same problem. LDS
