Lapua brass neck thickness in 6 BR ?????

Jim: Just measured some fresh Lapua 6BR, bought from Powder Valley about 6 months ago, lot# 4PH6046. With a tubing mic, neck walls are a very consistant .013", maybe 2 or 3 ten thousandths difference, I can't call it that close.

Frank is correct; Lapua is extremely consistent and runs right around that .013 range.
That would give you .013+.243+.013 which would equal .269 for the loaded round. Works just fine in a .271 or .272 no-turn chamber.

Thanks guys! I just picked up a custom gun from Sid Goodling...........Bat action, etc. with Kreiger barrel in 22 BR. The neck is 250 so 224 plus 13 plus 13 equal a perfect fit. Now to order some brass, dies and get going! Oh.........barrel is 1 in 7.7. Any suggestions on loads. Thanks again Jim

Jim;
I think you might want to consider turning those necks. Otherwise you may need a mallet to chamber those rounds. .224 + .013 + .013 = .250..... A .250 loaded round going into a .250 necked chamber I think may cause some problems. ;)

My quick calculation estimates thickness will grow from 0.013 to 0.014" when you size down for .224 bullets. So loaded rounds will be about 0.252". You will probably have to neck turn about 0.002" off the thickness or 0.004 off the diameter, to get 0.002 clearance in the chamber.

My old Lapua 6 BR brass case neck averages out at .013. Just received a new batch with a case wall thickness of .012. I have been having problems with splits in the case neck and shoulder...just posted my problems on this board a moment ago...

Neck the brass down before turning. That way it doesn't grow again once it is necked down. They will be much more consistent that way. Make sure you have at least .002 clearance in the chamber to avoid pressure problems.
