lapua 6mm primer pockets

I am just starting with the 6mm BR.

My Lapua 6mm brass requires quite a bit of pocket reaming in order to seat the primer flush, or lower.
I am using a very old Rock chucker press and old CCI 450 Primers.
(Rem. 7/2's not any better.)

I have ordered a dedicated reamer from hayden.
I am curious about this as I have never seen the problem addressed in any forum.

Thanks, Ken

I don't have any problem. I seat with a RCBS hand seater, and use CCI BR primers. I do clean the pocket each time the round is loaded, with the RCBS multi-tool rotating device (name?).

Same here. Hand prime with a Lee using BR-4 primers. No problem getting them flush. All I use is a Lee primer pocket cleaner to prep them.

Shot410, and RonAKA, do either of you uniform primer pockets, and is there an advantage to this? Personally I have never tried it, and am considering doing so if it makes a note-able difference. Thanks, and hope it wasn't bad manners to jump in here to prompt more info. Laurence.

I have not tried it. My research conclusion was that the Lapua pockets were fine from the factory.

I have the K&M pocket reamer, as delivered (.122") it will not touch the pockets of my blue box Lapua (.123") but on a new cardboard box I picked up the other day, it will just touch the radius at the bottom of the pocket on some cases. Those measure about half a thou shallower on avg. My primers all seat about .005" below flush. (CCI BR4)

JHORD, that is where I am, Brand New Lapua, blue box, unfired.
I had to set the reamer at about .223 - .224 to clean them up.
The first two cases I primed w/o reaming, using a Redding shell holder, I had much difficulty in getting then out as the Redding is not slotted like the RCBS to clear a high primer.

Since Haydon has a dedicated reamer I thought it might be a common thing.

STOP,,!!!

woah.....I dont know what ur doin...buttt...you have the first lapua brass with a problem.....the pockets are always tite" at first ....measure everything....double ck ...dont ruin your brass....it just may be titer than ur used to....Roger

I've loaded many hundreds of Lapua brass cases in 222, 223, 220 Russian, 6BR & 308 without ever touching the primer pockets, and have never had a seating below flush problem. Using the old RCBS bench mounted priming tool, and Fed, CCI, Win. & Rem. primers. Recently loaded my first batch of 6BR in the blue box, and again, no problems.

As mentioned above mine are so deep that the K&M primer pocket uniformer never touches the bottom and can't even clean out the residue since the pockets are so deep.

All I can say is I have been reloading for thirty plus years.
Never had this problem before/
Hard to visualize ruining the brass by removing a .001.

I did misread jhord, thought he had the same problem.

Subject closed.

KENH Are you using the pin for small rifle primers? A friend of mine had problems only to find that he was using the large primer stem instead of the small. All my Lapua brass has deep pockets, around .013 Thousandths below flush.

Contrary to popular belief, Lapua brass is not perfect. I've been using Lapua exclusively for Four years. Lapua 220 Russian for my 6PPC, and Lapua 6mmBR for my 30BR.

You'll find over time, that using a Sinclair primer pocket uniformer, or using any other good carbide uniformer on Lapua brass will reduce and square up, sometimes, just the rounded corners in the bottom of the primer pocket, and sometimes, both the corners and the entire bottom of the primer pocket.

That's why the use of a Uniformer is important. It makes the seating depth of primers consistent. Time after time. Uniforming primer pockets is a good habit and practice to get into.

The secret to using one effectively is to ensure the tool is pressed firmly against the bottom of the case head.

The Sinclair 8000 Series Uniformers are precision ground from one solid piece of tungsten carbide, so there is no need to worry about changing the depth of cut. I chuck the uniformer in a portable drill and have at it. It makes the process easier and a lot less time consuming.

Sometimes more then one pass is required to remove the excess brass that's been deposited in the pocket during manufacturing.

The same tool, can also do double duty as a primer pocket brush or cleaner prior to reloading.

Whilst working up some loads for my 6BR using Lapua brass recently, i noticed whilst seating Rem 7 1/2 match primers with my Lee handprimer that the primers were proud of the rim of the case. ???

I never experienced this with any other primers. The pockets are reamed with a uniformer after cleaning and sizing, but little or no cutting of the brass ever takes place ???.......Any of you guys out there ever found this??

Regards.

If you find small primers, of any brand, protruding from any case, after attempting to seat them, I highly recommend the use of the Sinclair Primer Pocket Uniformer UN-8006 [PPC & BR] found as you move down this page: http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=34720/Product/Sinclair_Primer_Pocket_Uniformers .

It's designed specifically for SMALL primer pockets you find in brass used in the PPC and BR cartridges, and was engineered to cut a little DEEPER than the regular small primer pocket uniformer.

I use nothing but Remington 7.5 primers and have never had a problem seating primers below the cartridge head surface when using the UN-8006 Uniformer.

If interested, here is a chart for most rifle primer dimensions: http://www.jamescalhoon.com/primers_and_pressure.php .

Thanks to this post I avoided buying the wrong one. ;D
Thank you to all!
