Ladder Test using 4 Different Primers

I was loading a new load for my 243 Win, and so I decided to re-read the article on Ladder testing, and noted his comment about load testing with different primers same load, seating depth, brass, neck pressure, etc, So I loaded up 3 rounds each for 4 different primers, and was surprised by the results. Primers tested were CCI 200, Winchester LR. Fed 210, and Remington 9 1/2. and CCI 200 had the tightest group of all hands down. The difference in spread is what surprised me. Just thought I would share this with you.

I too tested 4 different primers and was superised. I was working up a load for a 223 for a sporter rifle with 55gr bullets using IMR4895. I used fed 205m's, 71/2, WSR, and Wolf SRM's. The testing was at 300 and later 400yds with Wolf's beating all others by 50% smaller spreads.

For my .308 I've been hooked on BR-2's for years. Recently did a ladder test using the BR-2's and some Wolf primers which actually did better than the "Bench Rest" primers. Powder was Varget and best performance came with .4 gr less powder than with the BR-2's. Similar results to yours at 300 yards.

Considering that the Wolf and now Tula primers are half the price I may start using a lot more of them.

Have you tried changing the powder load for each primer. Most feel the load needs to be changed to get the best results.

Dang, what a novel concept! Sometimes a popular lie is better accepted than an unpopular truth.

It takes testing to wring out the accuracy, along with wind flags. Loading while at the rifle range is also the quickest way to learn.

Ladder tests while using wind flags have exponentially more meaning, without wind flags, you are often just making a WAG!
