Ladder test at 350y

Grimstod

Machinist, Designer, and Shooter.
So I can see that the gun and new barrel, def likes 44-45gr. Now what about the node up top? Some were around 49gr I think. 50gr is a little to high in pressure as primers were just starting to flow a little. Should I do a load in .2gr increments around 49gr? I will move my target back a lot farther this time to about 500yards.

You can also see how the wind was blowing when I started my test and then subsided as I started going the other way with my powder charges.

I do .5 grain increments and 2 loads the same. What range were you at? Will be interesting to see what it does at 500. Shame you didn't have 2 loads at 44 and 45. I would also try 44, 44.3, 44.6, 44.9 and 45.2. Then do the same between 48 and 49. Might as well drive yourself double crazy.

For the ladder farther farther is better better IMHO! If that's your Nosin', that looks pretty dang good so far! but again IMHO, distance helps a lot for the "read".

...and oh yeah...when you find the little "cluster", its time to see if smaller changes within that range give you somethng beter.

+1 on the previous comments...

Thanks for all the help guys. I loaded up some doubles in .3gr increments from 48-49.5gr. Wish I could do a seating test tonight but I don't think I will have enough time. Tomorrow I will be going to a spot that I can shoot 1k with a friend.

The ladder in the OP is at 350yards. I will do this next one at 500y.

Yes this is my Mosin. I have made a lot of changes to it. Mostly because of the things I have been learning here.

Ok so what do you guys think? 48gr acts really weird. Goes way to the left. I used a round robin style of shooting. Traveled on my mountain bike to the target to mark each every 3 shots. The 4digit number is the velocity. Some did not read so they are not marked.

I do not know why the pic is sideways. Sorry about that. Its not sideways on my phone of my mac.

Grim, Presume there was no sudden gust to account for the Left poi with 48.0. If that is true, have seen the same phenomenon with some rifles, where the next increment up from the one with left displacement is the beginning of a damn good node. M1A's are notorious for it, some bolts too. Bet your gonna be happy at 48.3-48.6. Seymour

Thanks Seymour! I settled for 48.6 she screams at 2670fps and that is quite good for a 54r pushing a 185gr berger VLD. Presure signs are good (well non existent). Next I will do my seating test. Right now I am loading to about 8 thousandths in the lands. Will back it off to see if I get better results.

I went out back to a friends place and we shot 1k and I hit the x mark on the first shot. I am very stoked about this gun. Will be using it a lot. Maybe a new barrel by next year. ::) I took video and will get it up as soon as I can.
