Kowa 82SV - Need info...

Anyone using the Kowa 82SV out here? I'm looking for a report on it compared to the ED Glass of the 883 series? The price differenece is huge between the two, and was wondering if it's worth the difference..

Thanks

David,

I ended up winning one of the new Nikon ED82 Fieldscope' at a ballon shoot this spring. To be real honest with you, I've very impressed with the Nikon. I wish it had a dual focus feature , but besides from that, I personally cant' tell any difference in clarity, color and resolution as compared to the Kowa 883 that I had. I really like the 75X eyepiece as well. For the money, I think it's going to be hard to beat...I have not had a chance to look through a 82SV and compare, but it's not ED glass......I'll be a Bayou next weekend with it...you're welcome to look through it..

Thanks Jim,
I appreciate the offer.
I'm not going to shoot the tryout. (Still waiting to see which 7mm to chamber )
If I can get my girls to clear their schedules, they may shoot the match.

David,

Looked thur one today at a shoot...It had the 25LER eyepiece. I was very impressed...I'm going to ahve to try a LER eye piece for my 82ED now!

I have the 883 and they are worth the money most of the time. When you have high mirage, they are no better than any other, 882, good scope. It depends upon what you are planning to do with it! If you are planning to see bullet holes at 400 plus yards in heavy mirage, forget it! Buy a remote camera for that.

Thanks for the info Guys.

Klong,
I know it's a little different, but it's the mirage we're trying to see clearly.
It's usually a very accurate wind indicator.

Thanks again
David

update...according to the sales manager at Kowa USA, the 82SV is the best value for shooting. He says that the higher end scopes are a solid win if you also want to use them for bird watching as the colors are better. But for looking at mirage and/or your target printing, there is nothing better than the 82SV. And my experience over that past 2 years, shooting F-open at 600 to 1000yards, bears that out.

Nothing like resurrecting an ancient tread as an excuse for an update. ;)

At any rate, I agree with you about the 82SV for mirage. It has by my hypothesis for a couple years now that ED glass helps tame the heat shimmer (aka mirage) better than non-ED glass. So my philosophy is to use the best ED or even better, Super-ED glass in your riflescope to aim the rifle & take the shot, and use specifically non-ED glass in your spotting scope to get the full flavor of the mirage (aka heat shimmer.)

I have been using my 82SV for wind reading for the last 5+ years. I have the LER reticle as well as the 20-60X zoom reticle. They both have their uses. I also have the digiscoping attachments for the Kowa and my Nikon D7500.
