Kimber conversion kit

Do we like this kit? If you have one, how about a quick review. I'm thinking of getting either the Ruger 22/45 lite or putting the Kimber on top of my Wilson Frame.

How about the accuracy and feeding? Any info is appreciated.

I looked at the little sub compact 22 from Browning. If the trigger didn't pinch my thumb web between the tiny beaver tail I might have bought it.

I want a little carry 22lr for target practice and in the woods gun ;D. I like the 1911 style and my slab side MKII with scope is a bit bigger and heavier then I want.

I am very biased. I would not consider a Kimber .22 conversion kit for any amount of money. I have owned 2 Kart conversions, 1 Advantage Arms customized by Bob Marvel and a Marvel Precision Unit 1 conversion for a 1911. All of the units functioned flawlessly and shot extremely well. Two of my friends have had the Kimber and did not get good results.

I have put many rounds down range with my Kimber conversion. Works well if you use good ammo like CCI Mini-Mags. Keep it clean and it will run fine. No experience with other units.

Cort, of the two you mention, which do you like best? What is availability and cost?

I haven't had a chance to research them yet. I would love to get my hands on the different makes to shoot them and see what they feel like side by side.

Has anybody had any experience with these, other conversion kits or must have compact 22lr pistols?

Bike, what kind of accuracy are we talking with the Kimber? Soda can at what distance type accuracy?

Jim,

I have one of the older Ciener conversions that Kimber marketed under their name. Works like a champ on my Colt Series 80.

Tried one of the newer Kimber conversions kits on the Colt and it would not function.

That said, if I was spending money for a 1911 conversion kit, would purchase a Marvel conversion. Comes in several grades and have not heard anything bad about them.

22 conversions are a blast. Nothing like shooting your favorite 1911 a bunch of rounds instead of just a few. Low cost of ammo is wonderful.

The Ceiner unit won't win any bullseye matches but is great with standard velocity ammo out to 20 yds or so.

Run em wet, keep em clean and they will treat you right.

A lot depends on how much accuracy you require AND how much you want to spend . I competed in Outdoor/Indoor Bullseye competition for a couple of years and had several upper end 22's but for performance, it was hard to beat the Marvel competition model (they make two different models) . I still own two and sold all the rest . I love mine . Google Marvel Precision to see what they offer .

Jim,

I bought my first Kart when Fred Kart first started manufacturing them. I sold it when I had my first child and needed some money. I, then, bought the second Kart off of Gunbroker and sold it when my eyes couldn't handle iron sights well enough for Bullseye competition. I bought the Advantage Arms direct from Bob Marvel and then later traded a S&W 41 for the Marvel Precision with a dedicated lower. I like all three brands of units.

Fred Kart no longer manufactures his conversion unit but still has a few parts in stock. His units occasionally show up on Gunbroker but tend to be expensive. I like his unit the best but have no complaints with the two units that I use now. The target that came with the Bob Marvel Advantage Arms unit is slightly better than the one that came with the Marvel Precision unit. However, I shoot the Marvel Precision unit a little bit better. Today, I have a red dot on the Advantage Arms and iron sights on the Marvel Precision. I shoot both of them on a regular basis. I have dedicated lowers for each unit so it is hard to call them "conversion" units ;-).

Bob Marvel no longer modifies the Advantage Arms units. Supposedly, he is going to manufacture and market his own system but I have not seen or heard anything about it. As a result, I would go with the Marvel Precision unit because it is available. The web site is http://www.marvelprecision.com/. I would consider a standard Advantage Arms unit if competition grade accuracy was not a requirement. The Advantage Arms web site is http://www.advantagearms.com/. I bought an Advantage Arms conversion unit for my Glock 19 and was very happy with it until my ex-brother-in-law talked me out of both the Glock and the conversion unit.

Both of my current conversion units shoot standard velocity .22 LR very well. I think I had to change the recoil spring to make it happen but don't remember. Some of the conversion units specify CCI MiniMag for reliability so ammo can definitely be a concern.

Good luck in your decision.

I use a Kimber Conversion, purchased in 2009, not sure of date of its manufacture. it has never had a FTF or FTF with CCI standard velocity. I am no match pistol shooter, but it shoots as well as my Ruger Mk II heavy barrel at 50 feet, and I like the feel of it better than the Ruger when it is atop my Kimber Gold Match.

Bought a used Kimber MATCH .22 for my Rock River Ball gun. I shot about 25 rds to get it zeroed and I then shot a few rapid fire 25yd. pistol targets. I shot a few to get the feel of the pistol, after a few rds I put up a new target and shot a clean with 4 x's. I was using Lapua Pistol OSP and X-act ammo. I shot about 300 rds. of that ammo with no failures. I paid $140 for the conversion and after shooting with that type of accuracy I would have been happy paying full price. I will not be using it for match's. it will be used for inexpensive practice. Mike

Good to hear. I haven't bought anything yet. I shelved the 22 pistol thing for a couple months or so. I put a tactical solutions upper that I had layin around on my MK II. After filing and polishing a bit on the feed ramp it works like a charm. It will hold me over till I decide which way to go on 1911 22.

if you can get your hands on one of the Karts you won't be sorry I have two originals standard and long and they will never be for sale.
i have used several different types of conversions and have never had any thing at 50 feet that impressed me. i have a Colt Ace and really am not impressed with the accuracy of it.

Before I relate my recent experience about the conversion kit, here are a couple gems from a well-known pistol smith:

A customer brought in a custom shop Super Match II with the complaint that he had tried several factory loads and none of them would chamber. Upon inspection the smith found that the chamber had only been rough reamed. It’s no wonder a round wouldn’t chamber. How does a piece leave their custom shop then get through final inspection. Clearly the piece was never test fired.

A Pro CDP was brought in by a customer who is a very proficient handgun shooter indicating that he couldn’t get the piece to shoot reasonable groups and wanted it re-barreled. The smith inspected the piece and found that the barrel crown looked as if it had been cut with a dull or broken cutter then someone tried to use a hand file to straighten out the crown. Again, how does a piece like that pass final inspection and test firing?

Now, my Kimber fiasco - I purchased a Kimber 1911 .22 conversion kit. As with all firearms, that I buy, I always completely clean, lube and bore scope the chamber and barrel before range testing. The Kimber conversion kits are advertised as having a “match grade barrel and bushing.” When the barrel was bore scoped, I found that it was littered with pits like you would see in a very old barrel that had rust pits (see photo). I contacted Kimber who requested that the kit be sent in. Along with the kit I included bore scope photos and a note that read: “Since the pits are just too deep to be polished or lapped out without changing the bore diameter, I am requesting that you please replace the barrel at your earliest possible convenience.” I received the kit back with the following repair slip notations: “Adjusted extractor, refinished barrel, reamed and polished chamber.” Perfect! The extractor did not need adjustment. The chamber did not need reaming or polishing when previously viewed with my bore scope and I specifically stated that the barrel pits could not be corrected with lapping or polishing. So, I again bore scope the barrel and low and behold it is still littered with pits (see photo). Kimber is again contacted and sent bore scope photos and again the kit is shipped back to them. Now I am told that they do not have any kits in stock and do not have any parts for them. Two months go by and not a word from Kimber so I send them notice that per the Magnuson Moss act that governs warranties I would like a refund. Crickets! A week later, after another note to Kimber, I receive a call from them indicating that they now have some barrels. It must have been a miracle! Again, the kit is shipped to them. I receive the kit back with the following repair slip notes: “Polished firing pin housing, replaced and polished barrel, test fired, inspected, cleaned and oiled.” Got out the bore scope again and wow! The new barrel has broach cutter chatter marks and gouges the likes that I have never seen before (see photo). Chatter marks on the lands and grooves, especially if they are perpendicular to the bore, unquestionably result in immediate bore fouling and loss of accuracy. I contact Kimber yet again, send bore scope photos yet again. Kimber asks if I test fired the piece. At this point, based on the condition of the barrel, test firing would be pointless but I agreed to take it to the range. 40 rounds fired and at 25 rounds groups were 7 ½” at 10 yards. I re-bore scope the barrel and found it heavily lead fouled, gee what a surprise! (see photo). After sending bore scope photos again to Kimber I have another conversation with them that ends with: “We don’t believe we can meet your expectations.” In other words, we advertise the kit as having a match grade barrel but we just don’t have the capability to make one!! How can a barrel that is advertised as being match grade but actually looks like a corrugated sewer pipe be inspected and sent out to a customer? A few days later I receive a call from a customer service manager who says: “We’ll refund your purchase price but you have to sign our release and return the kit to us first. It will take over two weeks, after we receive the kit, to issue you a check. If you don’t agree then we understand and wish you well.” Included in the release was a clause that stated that I had to remove any unfavorable internet posts that I created within 48 hours. Being that I have absolutely no trust in their ability to handle anything or honor what they promise I suggested that the check be issued first -or- that the two weeks to issue a check be reduced to the legal standard of 5 days. Kimber would not agree to either of the modified terms. Since I found Kimber to be untrustworthy and their agreement terms to be unreasonable and unacceptable coupled with their refusal to negotiate in good faith I refuse to be subjected to their treatment.

Shooting sports are supposed to be fun. A customer should not have to put up with substandard manufacturing, failed repairs and inept customer service.

I wouldn’t own another Kimber if someone gave me one for free. At Kimber quality control is completely nonexistent and they absolutely don’t have the desire or ability to meet reasonable customer requests and expectations. Hell, they can’t even manufacturer products that meets their own advertised standards. Kimber needs to change their company logo to: “We manufacture garbage and hope to sell it to misinformed idiots.”
