Kimber 82G from CMP - a range report

Good and honest report! A shooting buddy of mine just showed up at the range this past week with one of the Kimber 82G's that he bought from CMP. Outside of a small scratch on the forend, what an incredibly beautiful rifle! He mounted a Mueller 8-32X44 scope on her and removed the standard peep sights that came on her. He then tested her by first zeroing at 25 yds (8 shots) and then moved to 50 yds. He then shot both of versions of Wolf (MY & ME), Aguila, Sk, Federal Match (921) and Lapua. Folks, I've never seen ANY rifle of any make, shoot so accurately across the board with so many different ammo's. And that includes Anschutz which is part of my .22 stable of rifles. True Wolf was the best with Lapua coming in next. But this rifle would make anybody a proud owner. Too bad I'm building a 6.5mm right now and don't have the money to spare because I'd sure love to own one of these beauties. And besides, they're almost all gone anyway. But IMO is certainly worth the $600 expense.

Just got my 400$ Rusty last Friday, outside of the identical razor cut, what an incredible deal. The Rusty's aint Rusty... Seriously thinking about another..

Have not shot mine yet, since they are covered in a pi$$y yellow preservative, I tore it all the way down and am refinishing stock, adding a Tubb 4-way.. Cant wait to shoot.

Deal of the yr, fer sure..

I purchased a "rusty" from CMP last year. No rust, but a lot of preservative. As you've probably read in the CMP forums the bolt internals may be a little rusty/fouled. I immersed mine in WD-40 in a Z-loc for a couple of days while I cleaned up the rifle. The oil turned brownish, but when I tore it down it was bright and clean. I think some of the "rust" may be dried up preservative. It had the "signature" box-cutter slice but that sanded out when I stripped, sanded, and tung oiled the entire stock. Very nice walnut with some dark figuring. Shoots great! Wolf match has been best for me. I tried some less $ and much more $ ammo and found the Wolf to shoot best at a moderate $. Shooting with the kimber sights is very accurate (and kind of addictive), and at 50 yds as good as scoped even with my 60+ eyes. The adjustable trigger is excellent. I've read complaints about the ejector scraping the carbon fiber cleaning rod when cleaning from the breach...remove the one screw and set it and the ejector aside while cleaning....it takes about the same amount of time and effort as removing the bolt.

On two of the three of mine the ejector came off easily, but on one I could not unscrew it at all. Almost stripped off the slot on the screw, and no amount of WD help - I quit trying when I realized that yes, I will be stripping the screw head completely if I try even a tad more...

The screw head is just under the roof of the receiver - if it is not screwed in hard, a screwdriver at an angle does the job. But when it is - tough luck.

I used the 17 HMR rod with a 22 jag to clean that one.
