Kiff bolts

Just got a Kiff bolt for a Rem 700 SA .308 bolt face. It looks good with the exception of a fishtail looking spot near the lugs, see the picture. Is this normal? Its on both sides! It wont affect the function but cosmetically it doesnt look right. Also this has a rivetless extractor, I was going to have my smith install it cause I thought it was the riveted kind, how does this stay in place?

I also noticed that a slot at the rear of the bolt, which locks the bolt in place when the safety is on, is missing. I wonder if that was left off or something thats done by the smith.

I would email dave the pic of the bolt he is very good to work with . as for the bolt slot that is generally milled in when the bolt is made . however i don't know if dave suppiles that with his bolts . lastly the extractor is held in place by the ejection pin on the newer 700's. i would think that is the same method dave may use. Hope this is of some help. T.R.

The fish tail is our standard mill . I do not like nor will I ever grind a bolt with the riveted extractor . Remington Military only has me machine M 16 type extractor slots in the bolts they get from us. most of them are Mag face or the Lapua face. I think the best extractor is a mini 16 extractor . Stiller has us put the mini on there bolts. A nice bolt like that should have a ground spiral or diamond flute on it. This bolt will work great. THanks Dave

mousegunner,

If you've gone to the trouble of replacing your bolt I don't know why you wouldn't get one w/ an extractor that will be totaly reliable. I just recieved a mini-16 from Pacific T & G and am installing it this PM. Sako styles have been popular for many years and now it seems that the M-16 style is becomming more popular and for good reason, they are just-as if not more reliable that the Sakos and for me much easier to insatll.
In answer to your original guestion...
I was going to have my smith install it cause I thought it was the riveted kind, how does this stay in place?
Spring tension of the extractor itself holds it in the slot and the ejector plunger keeps it from rotating too far in either direction.
Good luck w/ your project. Joe
