KESTREL 4500 OR WINDMATE FOR LR??

My brother wants to pick up a windmeter for Camp Perry LR matches. Any thoughts/preferences for Kestrel 4500 or Windmate? They are within $20 of each other. We look at the flags for changeups but this would be a good learning curve for us to accurately build a wind/shot placement chart for LR in our data book. Thanks, Steve

If he wants the density altitude feature he'll be served by a Kestrel 4000.
The 4500 computes crosswind, but you have to identify the wind angle yourself anyway and the process takes so much time that the values might very well be invalid by the time they reach the sight settings.

If he has no interest in density altitude, he'll be equally well served by the Kestrel 2500 which will measure all he can use. Air pressure will not change fast enough to reach significant values, (it usually changes by 1-2 hPa by the hour and you need 20-40 to see a change in sight setting). If you DO have a significant change during a match I'd be more worried about a storm shelter than sight settings ;)

The anomometer on the Kestrel is excellent, very sensitive even in low winds. All anemometers have a delay of perhaps 10 seconds when the winds dies down - the "propeller" takes time to decelerate. A trick is to gently brake it with your finger and let it measure from the lower value.

Hope this helps...
