For the Mauser experts...
I've got an Israeli/FN K98 in the shop, brought in for a barrel swap. The bolt sleeve/shroud is mis-matched (not blued, as is the rest of the bolt) and the safety lever will not engage the cocking piece.
Happened to have one on hand from another where it swapped for a commercial side-swing shroud, screwed it on and it functions like a dream. I must be having a senior moment because I can't figure out the "why" here- you can see in the pics below the "original" shroud has about .060 clearance to the back of the receiver with the bolt closed- and my swapped one has around .038. That .022 is preventing the safety from engaging the cocking piece.
I always thought that the shrouds were interchangeable, but maybe not? The bolt travel when in battery is obviously the same with either shroud, so what's happening here?
