K&M – Neck Turner Users

K&M Neck Turner Users I just tried out K&M’s new expander mandrel window riser. I saw the bulletin article on it a while ago but did not completely pick up on the point that you can use the reloading press full stroke feature until trying it. It makes the neck expanding process so much easier and smoother using the full stroke on the press. No banging the case inside on the top of the flash hole with the stop when using only part of the stroke on the press. Using the presses full stroke expanding the necks is like seating bullets. Being able too see the case mouth at the top of the stroke makes set up a breeze. No more smashed case mouths. I used it on some 6mmBR brass which required everything screwed all the way down. Not much of the window was open but enough to peak in and see were the top of the case neck was at full up of the press ram. So keep it in mind on your next order and it is made in Michigan.

After using an Expandiron for prepping literally thousands of pieces of brass, all I can say is "It's about time!" Also, If working with short cases, like the 6BR, you can probably use an extended shellholder to get more of that window visible. This looks like a really good accessory to their otherwise good expander.

Anybody know if this item will work in a Forster Co-Ax press? That was one of my other gripes with the previous Expand-Iron mandrel setup - the knurled body is just wide enough it won't *quite* fit in the slot on my Co-Ax.

It fits in my CO-AX. Always has. Here's the one, sans the the screw: http://www.kmshooting.com/catalog/case-neck-expanding-tools/expand-iron_complete.html .

Yep. Like I said, mine won't quite fit... probably need to find someone with a lathe and have them buzz a small amount off the OD of the knurling.

memilanuk,

I just got a K&M neck turner and Expandiron, but had not yet tried the Expandiron in my Co-Ax press. Just checked it, I have the same interference fit you described. The threaded portion of the Expandiron will fit in the slot, but the knurled portion will not. I can set the lock ring close to the bottom of the Expandiron and the knurled portion is above the press. Don't see why that would not work.

The window riser looks like a nice addition though.

Or, sand some of the knurling off with a: belt sander, sandpaper and elbow grease, or a file.

Re: K&M Neck Turner Users

They may work OK for expanding cases that are already at the desired caliber, but I would avoid expanding .220 Russian cases up to make 6PPC on a Forster press. A friend has one, and I gave it a try. The results were cases that were quite a bit more crooked than with a more conventional press. My best results, for this task, have been with a Harrell press that has a very close fit between the die threads and the expander die, better than with my Rockchucker. This the only task where I found the Forster to give inferior results, and is so specialized that for many shooters, the problem may never arise.
