Just musing

I've never done it before, but I've always questioned how much powder was in a 1lb can, or exact weight. Other than a cheap kitchen scale to weigh macaroni or rice, I have nothing accurate to weigh 1 pound.
This morning I started the day going to load 100 6.5x47 cases, charge 41.0 gr of RL-17. I gave my last open container to a friend, so I broke out a fresh one, dumped the pound into my 2 Chargemasters, right away I'm thinking, this is short, bad. I'm kinda getting irritated now. If any of you are like me, shorting someone bullets, powder, or primers is an offense punishable by death ;) I've never really had the opportunity to do this since I started running the Chargemasters, the hopper is huge just to get to the auger, so if it's low, just open a new can and dump the remainder in it when done.
OK, I load my 100, only spilling maybe 15 kernals, so I've used 4100grs. So I go to charging it out at 280gr a charge, I get 8 pans, so now I'm at 6340grs. I dump the hoppers and get 3 more 280's, and one pan that weighs 84.2, for a total of 7264.2grs.
That's 6 extra cases, my faith in humanity has been restored for the time being, and I think I like myself again :)

I've been questioning the amount of this powder since I bought it, now I know, all is good in Milo's world.

Three pounds ago of H4831sc, I put 21,000 grains into my excel spreadsheet and kept track of each loading. A couple days ago, excel said I was down to 45 loads. I loaded 25 and weighed the remainder. I have 15 more grains than I expected. So I have enough left for 20 more loads with about 28 grains left over. Needless to say, I was impressed.

I have wondered the same thing at times.... also if we weigh in grains ( a troy weight) should not a pound of powder be a troy pound? 480 grains to the troy ounce, 12 troy ounces to the pound.

Also interesting thing to note: the three most valuable items on the frontier; gold, pharmaceuticals and gunpowder were all weighed in troy weights.
