just a little crazy...

What’s wrong with the .40’s?
Not much of a pistol person anyway but I do have 2 or 3
For me, my uncle, cousins & neighbor, it wasn't fear of a double charge.
It was the high pressure to begin with.
All of us had different pistols from different manufacturers. First shots were spot on. Same follow up with slow fire.
Rapid fire 2-3 shots not so accurate.
The high pressure gives a heavy, sharp recoil impulse.

My two penny opinion is,

One year I shot a Michigan 150 lb whitetail deer with a double tap from 20’ with my hand load 9mm w/Hornady 147 gr XTP, DRT. The next year, shot another 150 lb MI whitetail deer my handload with a 45ACP w/ 200 gr XTP from 25’. One shot. DRT.

Guess what I’m getting at is, with a 40 S&W, make that first shot count. Bet it will DRT a deer just as good as a 45ACP, unless your racing a clock to nock steel plates or bowling pins.

Nothin' is wrong with the .40, if I had to only have one pistol caliber, that would be the one to keep IMHO. A lot of gun scribes condemned it, why, because they are on contract and had to have something to write about. An article I had from a noted gun scribe, he tried to give reasons about why the .40 was such a bad choice. He stated that recoil was a problem with the .40, because it generates recoil that is approaching that of a .45 ACP. A couple of paragraphs later, he was praising the .45 ACP for it's mild recoil, sounds like BS to me. The .40 was the sweetheart of police forces and government agencies for several years. With newer and better ammo choices, statistics claim the 9MM is just as deadly plus police and soldiers can carry more of it because of the reduced weight. Another reason government agencies switched is difficulties in recruiting larger statured officers. With smaller men and women among the ranks, the lighter recoiling 9MM has now become the new darling cartridge. For a defense pistol if you don't roll your own, the .40 would be the top choice because of ammo availability. The .40 is snappier than a 9MM or a .45 ACP (unless loaded to +P specs), it's loaded to the same pressure as a .357 Magnum (35,000 psi) as opposed to the .45 ACPs 19,000 psi, plus it has bullets in the same weight class as the .45. The 9MM is loaded to similar pressures, but it's bullet weights are in the low to mid .38 Special range, a cartridge noted for mild recoil.
I don't know who said it first, for a defense pistol "it doesn't matter what caliber it is as long as it begins with a 4".

I shot a 357 magnum 2” Air weight Smith& Wesson. I only shot it once. I mean 1 shot! That was enough! The only pistol I ever shot that I knew I :eek:would never buy!
