Jump and freebore

I have a question. I am just starting to play around with a 260 rem. OACL when touching it around 2.950. Chamber was cut with .160 freebore. This gives about .264 of the bullet in the neck not counting the boat tail using 140vld. base of bullet is about at the neck sholder junction and base of boat tail is about even with case neck junction. This about what I think I want so all is well. However in order to feed from as a repeater I would need OACL to be 2.880 or 2.870 for a lil mag room. This would represent a .080 jump? Now the question IF the gun will shoot well at 2.950 or close t that. What would be the effect if you try and jump .080? That sounds like a long jump to me. Just thinking, Next time I will use a long action then I can seat and feed where I want to.

Gotta test, begin seated out to the longest that’ll still reliably run from the magazine and then seat in increments of .003” deeper until you’ve found a depth at which it’ll shoot happily whilst having been fed from the magazine.

If gunning for critter and your best but too long for magazine use stuff shoots all that much better than the best you’ve been able to get from anything seated to magazine length, then manually load your best too long stuff for that all important first shot and load the magazine with the best of the short enuf for backup.

I have a 260 and ran into the same problem. With the Berger 140's, if I loaded anywhere near the lands, they wouldn't fit into my mag. If used a shorter freebore reamer to solve problem #1, then I had potential donut issues (bullets seated too deep in the case). I ended up going with the 139 Scenars, and am going to try the new Berger 130 AR when available. Both these bullets have a much shorter nose and mag length should not be an issue.

bdotson,
The long action idea when using our VLD bullets is a good one. Gives you much more room. And if its still not enough and you have a Remington or Winchester action the WYATTS Outdoor Custom Rifles extended magazine box can be fitter into your stock and give you another .110 in length if you need it. And test , like ole freak said. If you have our reloading manual. All the loads in it are based on magazine length loaded ammunition. Go to the INFORMATION tab on our main page and click on TECH TALK and read Eric's article "VLDs , making them shoot" to get some bullet seating depth testing instructions. The new 6.5 130 AR/OTM/HUNTING HYBRID bullet may be your answer too. Great for AR style rifles !!
