JP Howitzer Brake

Does anyone have any knowledge of the performance of this brake. From it's design I would imagine that the thing would reduce recoil and also, given the vent design, would suppress muzzle flip as well. Even if you don't have hard facts or serious rumors I would value your opinion.

If you want a real good muzzle brake look into the Muscle brake by Centershotrifles. I have one on my 338 Ultra mag and now it is fun to shoot. It kicks less than my 308 Win. I know Jim is a member on this site. I actually copied his design and put one on my 308 and it kicks less than a 223. You don't get any blast coming back at you, it all goes towards the sides.

Sorry but that brake on that site is one of the uglyest things I have ever seen.

Has anyone seen the demonstration mentioned on the EAB website; they posted the following claim:

Different guns and different cartridges recoil differently. The designer of the JP Brake used to demonstrate it at shooting ranges by placing the butt of a 30-06 rifle on his nose and firing the JP equipped rifle down range (don't try this yourself). We once built a 15" Encore in 300 Win Mag with a JP Brake installed and the customer used it to shoot 80 round silhouette matches from the one-handed Creedmoor shooting position. In fact with the JP Brake installed, "Most" centerfire rifles will almost stand still when fired. However, some particularly vicious recoiling rifles (such as pencil barreled WSMs) will still have some recoil. How much will be relative to the cartridge, rifle, and shooter's sensitivity. As stated above the JP Brake will give "Up To" 100% recoil reduction and without a doubt it is the most effective muzzle brake.

I think that if it didn't work, the military wouldn't be using a similar design. That being said, I think it looks a little ridiculous on a rifle...but it also looks awesome.

I have been using JP's eliminators on a couple of rifles for years now and they are exactly what the claims state. They virtually eliminate
the majority of recoil.NOT pretty and EXTREMELY loud. Nasty to shoot beside ( I lent a rifle to a competitor who shot beside me prone.I cursed him every time he pulled the trigger )
Efficiency vs purty. They just work.(But double plug along with muffs)

Gord O.,

Consider that a brake operates to reduce the felt recoil from firing. That would be a force exerted to the rear. As well, a brake can suppress the "flip" up of the barrel. That action is suppressed by putting holes in the top of the brake with none corresponding on the underside. The result is a downward force when fired. My assault rifle barrel is actually "depressed" when fired. The JP, given that the port openings are angled, should have some vertical function, as I see it. Does the JP suppress flip? Sorry for the long-winded explanation but many don't get all this and I am certain I don't get it all either.

Thanks,

John
