Joe Maisto Boxes

I wasn't sure if Joe was still making loading and range boxes. So I called him today what a great guy ! We talked quite awhile about benchrest and the the construction world. He's a retired union carpenter. At 87 he still going strong. After my ordered we emailed back and forth all day into the evening. Love to hear them ol time stories

Thank you ALL, gentlemen . Quite honestly, it was simply the most enjoyable endeavor of my life. The classic wood boxes using many different types , along with the many hours on the finishes , takes it's toll after a bit. The "pumpkin "has several. It was never about money, but more importantly...joining the greatest bunch of people in the bench rest field. I could talk endlessly about this adventure...

And ...yes Dave, more than a few jumped on the idea....
The magnets were certainly a first. The HDPE material has proved itself, along with the SS hinges made to my specs by a MO. company.
As time passed, improvements were made, the latest being the slip proof grooves on the cover, certainly a plus. And...so it goes. Again ...thank you all.

Joe made at least one for Don “Pumpkin” Nelson of Honey Locust wood. It had a beautiful orange showing in the grain. I know Don loves or loved it. I have one of Joe’s of black walnut and then I got my hands on some ebony and made one out of that wood. No, they aren’t for sale.

Funny story about that particular wooden box Don bought with a slight streak of orange...

I was about to throw this "chunk" of wood into my wood burner in my garage ( where my shop was), and thought... Gee, this would look good made into a cartridge box ! Got it done... ( liked it, and decided to keep it .) Along comes the SS.... Don says to me... What you got to show me ?
I did. He said...I SEE ORANGE ! I said... that's mine Don . He said... I WANT IT ! It was painful but he got it.... after forfeiting some of his gas money for going back to CA .:)

I bought my first box from Joe at the Supershoot around 2003. Still using it.

Tony Larson gave me this nice box for my Farley out of a rare imported wood...pallie wood I believe he called it....nice stuff. Sure miss him traveling with me.

Anyhow after he tells me about the pallie wood he goes on to say that one day some parts came to his shop and the wood on the pallet looked so nice he made thisthumbnail (87).jpgthumbnail (88).jpg out of it............

Any idea on the selling price at the time? I'm thinking I have 2 of these I recently came into. Find it very coincidental this thread came up as I only have had about 2 weeks. Any help appreciated.
