Jig / fixture/ method for pinning a recoil lug in 700

i have a 700 I can foresee replacing barrels on in the future so I was going to pin my lug to the receiver. One, I can not find a commercially available fixture to do so or instruction on how to do so.
I was going to turn up a stub to center the lug, place the receiver in my action wrench to align it, and a reduced diameter locknut to hold the lug down and allow me to drill the pin holes, using the holes in the lug as drill bushings.
Anyone have a better way or see a problem with my idea?

Darrell Holland has a nice fixture for this. His website is kinda lousy (not RESTful) so I can't post a direct link. Go to https://www.hollandguns.com/ and click "Gunsmithing" in the left column. Should be at the top of that page.

The lug hold-down that comes with it won't work (very well) with an oversized receiver thread, but it's easy enough to make one--just like you thread a tenon.

It's kind-of pricey at $160, but it's useful for a whole lot of other things where you need to fixture a Remington footprint receiver.

Like cutting a bolt-stop slot:

I made a long v-block like in the picture. It has so many uses. Pinning lugs, side bolt release, scope mount screw hole work, exc. Make one and you will find many uses.

How does the v block work for pinning? How does it locate the lug? I have a v block with a hole in it I have used for receiver holding before.

If you decide to buy the Holland action fixture get it direct from him. He packages them well before shipping. I sent three back to MidwayUSA because the packed them in a bubble wrap plastic bag. They were beat all to pieces.

I use a tool I made to center the lug. I found all the tools sold by badger etc will fit some lugs but not others. So I made a tool with screws on each side I can adjust to get it centered the way I want it.

I don't like pins. I like to make my lug a very tight fit over the shoulder in front of the threads. This is a custom fit for each lug (well, I finally bought lugs in bulk so all the rifles i build are the same but if you're using someone else's lug, the ID will vary). But a fixture to precision place the pin to accommodate the tight fit would have to be the exact diameter of the shoulder. I don't want to make a pinning fixture for each barrel.

The other option is to make the pin hole a sloppy fit in the lug, which will work, but doesn't give a machinist much pride.

So I just use my fixture.

that's pretty much what I had in mind, but to use my brownells action wrench to locate the lug so its indexed with the bottom action screw.
thanks
I use one of my Kleindorst lug jigs for doing that, bolted to the receiver..

Attached is what I made - similar to what is posted above. I made a square that fits over the vblock to square the lug against and a stub and hold down clamp to hold it centered. On the other side of the block, I made a smaller v for bolt work - extractors and threading handles.
Alex - what's the benefit of having blind holes? Why not get the lug with no holes and drill and ream both at the same time? The lugs I pinned, I cut pins from a 3/32 drill blank. They fit snug but the lug can be removed. Is there a preferred material for pins- drill rod dowels, etc...? How deep are the holes normally drilled in the receiver.

Thanks
Rich
