The article was most interesting. Congrats to Jeff for outstanding shooting. Good luck in this coming year.

Jeff, if you read this, I'm new to this forum and couldn't figure how to send an email directly to you or if privacy restriction permits such.

Question on the old Remington action rifle. What I'm curious about is the bedding. Article says the action is pillar bedded and barrel is 30" LG X 1.220" OD straight contour. That's a big stick for the Rem SA. Is the barrel free floated the entire length or partially bedded? Thinking on doing something similar.

Thanks and Best Regards

Paul

Thanks Paul. I appreciate it.

The actions are on aluminum pillars and bedded with Devcon. Both are free floated the entire way. With most peoples rifles, Richard cuts out the barrel channel about the same amount as every other smith. People like them to look pretty. With mine I have him open the channel out alot. I think barrels flex alot more most people do. Even if they dont, I want alot of airflow around the barrel.

I'm kinda surprized that I havn't been attacked yet for some of the things I said.

Jeff

I was thinking about the same as the original poster was about that big of a stick hanging out that much......,no barrel block on short action)...

if anyone is going to attack you uhhh well I don't think anyone on this site is that dumb...

great job and great article

Jeff:

Thanks for the quick reply.

That is great info and most useful. I don't think anyone can argue with success.

Does Jeff Trayler shoot at Camp Atterbury? I think I may have been there with him in the past. He definitely gits r dun.

Are you going to sell the old gun?

Nice article and thanks again.

Best Regards

I think Jeff shoots at Atterbury. I know he shoots at Ft.Knox and we both go to the matches in Tennessee. He'll chime in.

Nope I'm not selling this one. I'm gonna hang it on the wall along with a rifle I got from J.J. about a year ago.

Paul,
I can answer your question better about the barrel and action if I knew what your concers are.
You just said that it was a big barrel onto the Remington action. What do you see as a downside to free floating from the back side of the recoil lug forward?

Jeff,
It is hard to “attack” success.
But you are breaking a lot of peoples’ “must do” or “must have” rules.
You might not all me your friend after I say that even I don’t agree with some of your match preparation techniques.
We shooters have worked ourselves in a state of mind that if we don’t own the latest piece of equipment by “X” person, our chance of winning a match is out the door. We have to HAVE IT right now or we might as well send in our entry fee and stay home.
Your article showed that it isn’t about equipment. It is about shooting.
The article shows how you are “studying” the game. You took the information from me as a starting point. Added or subtracted more info that you read or were told, and formed your own technique. And you are applying those “studies” to the course of fire.
The most points that are lost in a match are due to the shooters lack of confidence in himself. He has the equipment required to stay in that ½” MOA X-ring. But he doesn’t believe that he can shoot all “Xs”. So he accepts 10s, 9s or worst. A winner is the shooters that see a change in the conditions and then knows what to do to stay in the middle. Nothing makes me simile more then being in the “x” on one shot by holding way “right” and still be in the “x” the next shot by having to hold off slightly “left”. I beat the conditions. That’s when it is fun.
I’m sure that I will “question” you about your loading and cleaning methods when you come over Saturday, but I will not “attack” you. Well maybe if you beat me again at the Nationals.

The Jeff Cochran article is the best article I have ever read on shooting F-Class and I read everything I can get my hands on.

Everyone is very interested on how the hard holders shoot their match and the equipment they are using.

I found it most interesting that Cochran uses a $39.00 front rest from Midway, a lot of Pod People spend over $500.00 for a fromt rest.

At the Nationals this year, I watched Jeff clean every relay. He is a machine, did not react at all to the pressure and there was one shooter, Bret S. that was right on his heels.

Hell I was a nervous wreck just watching them shoot!!!

Could it possibly be the shooter and not the equipment?

Chuck

Paul,
I have only shot at Atterbury once, although I live in the southern part on Indiana, there is no good way to get there. I can get to KY and TN as fast or faster than to Atterbury, and I work 3rd shift so Sunday night is my Monday and most matches are held on Sunday :,

Richard:

Thanks for chiming in. Guess I have the misconception that the Remington actions are flexible/weak as compared to premium customs. And that would be exacerbated by hanging long heavy unsupported barrels on them. But like I said, ya can't argue with success. Don't get me wrong, both my prone guns are Remington actions.

Presently I'm not an F Class shooter but had an opportunity to shoot a real good one at Perry. It was just plain fun. After reading Jeff's article, I thought hell why not if the Rem 700 will work.

I happen to have a nice Rem SA, a long heavy Broughton barrel on order, and talked to Steve McGee about one of his laminated F Class stocks. When I get all this gathered up, perhaps I can send it your way.

Jeff:

Thanks for the reply. I seem to remember seeing your name on the roster at Atterbury in the recent past. Yeah if your not near I-65, getting up to the Indy area is a pain. I come down from South Bend. Hate trolling along that speed trap 31 at 4 in the morning.

Best Regards

Paul

Paul,
I admit that I'm new to the 30" 1-1/4" barrels. Mainly because F-Class in new to our area. We don't have a 1000 yard BR club around the DFW Texas area that I know of. So I have never hung that big a barrel on any action before 2000. But I have been building target rifes and pistols since Silhouette came to the US mostly on the Remington actions.
A couple things about Jeff's rifle. This is the fourth barrel and we have never touched the bedding since day one. It is also a "switch barrel" rig. He used the "port entry" style wrench so doesn't have a lot of torque on the barrels either. If they "flex", they do it the same way everytime. And that is really what counts. His actions isn't really "blueprinted" as some would think. All I do is lap the lugs and square the face of the action ture to the factory threads. The bolt is not fitted with sleeves, it is fluted for looks but does add a sight amount of stiffing.
Oh his gun isn't the only one shooting this well that I built. He just shoots his better than the other guys. Like I said he has the confidence to shoot an "X" everytime.

Let me state that I'm not against using a custom action. I have many that my guns are built on. But the close tolerence actions really shine in the guys trying to get all the bullets in one hole in a hurry. For prone slow fire, reading the conditions 15 or 20 times for each shot is the trick. With the new smaller scoring rings in F-Class, I see us going more and more to benchrest style equipment.
And I would be proud to put your new rifle together.
