JB Bore bright ?

I decided to run a patch using JB Bore Bright thru my previously "cleaned" Sako 22-250 chromoly factory bbl while I was checking resized brass dimensions.

To my surprise, the clean barrel looked like this...

So I then cleaned with brushes, patches using Butch's -my standard until clean. Then ran some more JB Bore bright thru, expecting to see a pretty clean patch. Instead- more patches that were blackish.

I'd like to think the rifling looks clearer peering down the bore after. Not sure.

I used to shoot V Max moly coated quite a bit years back.

Thoughts?

I have other cut rifled SS barrels and they clean up quite quickly.

any info appreciated. I did a search on this site & read a few remarks.

Bore bright is an abrasive compound. It will continue to remove metal from your barrel as long as you keep using it.
Now that you have polished the barrel, follow up with your normal cleaning process to remove the residual Bore Bright.

I like to use Kroil to flush out the residual abrasive compound, it seems to work well for me.

Unless I am misreading your sequence, patches with JB WILL be black due to the breaking down of the already dark paste. Following up with a regular cleaner should get rid of most of it, but I have had stainless steel revolver barrels produce darkened patches even when mirror clean.
JB used right can save a good barrel. I once bought a Ruger #1B in .22/250 that the previous owner was honest enough to tell me that the barrel was shot out. 4" groups are considered the best it could do. Just to be sure, I spent quite a bit of time cleaning with copper cleaners and JB. It now shoots 52-grain Amax bullets into .3" groups. This from a rifle made in the 70s that had been used for prairie dog shooting.

thanks gents. exactly what I thought. I could do 1000 passes and it would always be black...and no cleaner.

I have used simichrome polish (not on guns) and it looks exactly the same. clean metal & black cloth...

Yes, I read the directions on label-- states to make 40-60 passes (!).

I never pull brush or patch back down barrel, so I used 20 or so patches. I will say that yes the rifling is clearer. I will use this sparingly in the future though. This rifle shoot great & I want it to continue.

I have never used Kroil, will try it in the future.

I never pull brush or patch back down barrel,
Pulling an UNDERSIZED nylon brush back down a barrel wont hurt a thing, and in fact can help smooth things better. If you are going to continue using this product, I strongly suggest you start with Kroil and JB BORE-PASTE followed by the Bore-brite. Works very well. I have had the same experiences as SSL. dedogs

you are correct. I did not follow the instructions really, just improvised. I will try an undersized brush after shooting this one (test loads).

thx-
