Jan IBS 600 yard Match Report Western Colorado

Registered IBS? With someone shooting a rail gu

Yep, giving it a go with my dasher.

How good did the rail shoot?
Well, what ranking is below a rookie?........ whatever that is, that is where I am with an unlimited rifle.
The rail is crazy fun and let’s just say, I have a great deal to learn!

This is the second match I have shot it in just to see how it does against the bag guns in the same conditions. I have my 1.25” HG barrel and action in the rail at his time and the silly thing wants to shoot. If I would just quit playing with the tuner and other variables...... actually that is why I bought it......
Let me go run the program with my groups and scores included and I will let you know.

Edited to add HG with rail in the mix

@gunsandgunsmithing
After discussing tuners on short heavy barrels with Mike Ezell, I decided to test it during match conditions. Starting with target 1 at zero, each successive target was shot with the tuner moved out an additional 1/2 mark. Out because it was a bit colder yesterday (match day) than it was a week earlier when I was out trying to find a node.
Remember, I have not had this rail very long and I have not completed my load development.

I will add, @jackieschmidt has also helped out with some great advice to help with the learning curve.

Very good shooting under any conditions. 26* ??? That makes it a surprise anyone showed up to shoot. Like ice racing, there is often someone willing to try.

How you keep the rifles in tune at such low temperatures is outstanding. How the shooters can endure it is unfathomable.

Thanks for such a well-done report, pictures, sheets and credits all make this a fine job.

You just keep adding more powder, that tune is still there. As long as I keep the heater running in the score shack (my hunting camper) for the Statistican, were good to go. It is when I fail at that we are all in trouble!

Understand.

When I shot in the IBS shoot at Manatee the day after Christmas, it was hideously cold in the low 40's or high 30's. Very unusual for south Florida as the normal temperatures in winter are low 70's. I kept my ammo in a cooler with a heat pack under it. Worked well as in LG. I had super results and a big lead.

Of course that did not help me in HG as the trigger in my HG rifle broke and no amount of fiddling would get it to hold reliably. Still waiting on the new trigger ordered or will use a different rifle for this month's shoot.

Some of our shooters actually did change their loads to hopefully keep in tune. Steve Krauss did what I did with a heated cooler for his ammo. He did OK in LG and won it all with good results in HG to go along. Far as I know we were the only ones using some form of heat source to keep our ammo warm as long as possible.

Great job as usual, Clay. We really appreciate your efforts to host our shoot despite having only eight shooters. It would have to be a lot colder to keep me from showing up. Too much fun!

I think I understand.
We have the opportunity to do our load development at those cool temperatures. As far as I know, none of the match participants use a cooler or heating system to keep the ammo warm. We tune in the cool conditions and all is good.
I move my load about a half of a full grain (.5) with H4895 or RL-15, as the temperatures warm up....... 20’s in the winter and 100 by July.
We do shoot each month except July and August, ya gotta go scouting for elk at some point, might as well do it while the valley is HOT!

Edit
Nearly all of us are using a PDT Tuner, that really helps with unexpected temperature swings. We have found with a little finesse, you can find the sweet spot pretty quickly.
