ive never shot comp. Got a few questions about palma type sight options for me.

Okay, im a firefighter and i was thinking about entering the california firefighter olympics in one or two of the shooting sports.

im a long range varmint shooter and ive got some really accurate rifles so i was hoping they would have a F class or F/TR since that would be right up my alley. but of course the only matches they have for rifles are small bore 3 position rifle (50 yards), and Service or match rifle shot on 200 yard rangeTargets reduced to simulate 300-600 yards. all matches use NRA rules (which i dont completely understand even though ive read the NRA's website rule book).

i really really wanted to use my newly built 6br in something shooting 300, 600, or better yet 1000 yards. oh well.

so i am kinda up the creek with my scoped varmint rigs, but i still want to shoot and have fun in some type of rifle class. and if they are using the NRA rules, ive only got one rifle that even meets the caliber requirements (223). dont all NRA highpower service and match comps require the use of either 223 or 308? the only 223 ive got is a savage long range precision varminter. and it wouldnt be any good in the rapid firing because it's a single shot. and even if it was a repeater, it's really heavy and i dont think anyone makes a front site that would mount onto the 1" diameter barrel.

so, now what im left with possibly doing the small bore match with my Remington 521-T Junior Special that was handed down to my father from his dad, then it was handed down to me. It's a great shooting rifle for as far as the naked eye can clearly see. I shot a ground squirrel at 120 yards off of a sandbag rest on a bench once. I got right on him, then held over about a foot and hoped he didnt move, then i squeezed the trigger and i heard it thump him, saw him flop and squeal a bit and that's all she wrote for that little guy.

so i've found an inexpensive peep site from midway (Williams 5D-510 Receiver Peep Sight http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=479543), but im wondering if there is an inexpensive front sight (similar to a globe) that would clamp onto the small barrel to make better use of the rear peep sight. Or should i just buy the rear sight and try it with the existing front sight?

any help in any area would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks,
Jeremy

Most of the globe front sights that clamp on that I've seen aren't inexpensive. Plus they usually require a .750 or .812 barrel tenon. The other type of globe front sights usually fit into a dovetail in the barrel. Does your current front sight on your 521 use a dovetail? If so, you might be able to go that route.

I looked up the firefighter olympics, and the highpower match is a 200 yard reduced across the course match. Like you mentioned, you'll have to shoot both slow fire and rapid fire stages. You can use scoped rifles under rule 3.3.2 NRA Any Sight Match Rifle/Tactical Rifle, but they would have to be able to hold five rounds, and reloading a scoped bolt rifle that doesn't have a detachable magazine would be PITA.

Not knowing what guns you currently own, if you really wanted to shoot the across the course match you could try and borrow a rifle from a friend. Do you know anyone that has an AR-15, M1 Garand, or M1A? Any flavor of one of those would let you compete in the service rifle, or match rifle category depending upon the rifles configuration.

If you want to save a little money and you want to shoot iron sights, the CMP is selling Redfield Palma receiver sights - minus the iris - for $150. The basic Gehman iris is about $53. You can buy a barrel band for about $40 and the dove tailo is extra. Then you will need the globe.

thanks scott.

a note at the bottom of the fire olympics page stated that "All events will be shot with open sight." so im assuming that that kills the NRA 3.2 Any Rifle Rule.

im thinking that i might just not spend any money on more stuff to do the match and just use my grandpa's 521T and have fun with it....
oh, and by the way, what size target should i practice with for the small bore 50 yard match?

but just fyi, my rifles that would be considered for using in any kind of competing would be these below (sorry for writing the obvious info. i added pics after the fact);

Rem 700 varmint with lam thumbhole stock in 22-250 with a Jewell trigger(wears a Leupold LR 6.5-20 scope). 1/4-1/2 MOA @ 100 yards consistently with 55gr Vmax handloads off a bipod and rear rest.

Rem 700 (built by JPG rifles who is a site sponsor) in 6br, 28" bartlein 5R barrel 1-7.5 twist contoured 1.25" - 1" straight taper (Leupold 8.5-25 LRT), jewell trigger, HS tactical stock with vertical grip.

I wont go into the savage LRPV single shot with the right bolt left port action for obvious reasons

and for the smallbores i have..

the Rem 521-T with the iron sights and a couple of magazines for it.

i also have a Ruger 10-22 light varmint (produced by accusport).

Any rifle is diffrent than any sights. For example a flat top AR carbine is an any rifle. If it has a BUIS set-up on it it's iron sights.

I would not spend money altering your rigs. It would be much easier to borrow am M1, M1A or AR with iron sights. Depending on the configuration you may end up in match rifle. so what.

I've only shot smallbore at 50 feet, so I looked at the rules and it should be the A23/3 or A23/5 target.

Hey Leroy, Just to let you know, once i picked up the rifle from you i went right to work on bedding the action to the stock and installing the Jewell trigger. The bedding went well again. I did it like you do, not the whole length like i did that long action wood stock that I showed you.

I've only got 56 rounds down the tube, but i found a good load and once i got some rounds down it i was able to get a .17" three shot group. So it's obviously going to be a shooter! The down side is that 105 Amaxs are non-existent right now. Ive got some on back order but it may be next year before they get to me. So i ordered up a few hundred 107 sierras which should shoot good in it too.

Hopefully i can get back to the range in the next couple weeks to find my load with the 107s and get the barrel all broken in.

Im also waiting on getting my Jewell back. I had to send it in for maintenance. It wouldnt set when i closed the bolt. They said that some of the surfaces needed to see stoned or sharpened up. and they worked on the safety too because it was getting difficult to engage. Hopefully it will be back soon.

Thanks for the good job on the rifle and the tips on bedding the action!
Jeremy

Oh, and the bolt you traded me was jeweled, but i thought it would look cool polished out so i went ahead and did that too. I think it turned out really nice. I also removed the dual dovetail setup and went with a EGW 20moa picatinny rail. At 40 bucks it seems like a steal. It's a nice peace and has worked well so far...

Hey Jeremy
If you you're going to start competing you should consider going down to Pala for the Varmint Silhoutte shoot its lots of fun, targets from 200 to 600 yards your 6mm BR would be perfect.

That's pretty cool! I think i will try that out. Where do you stay when you go down (id imagine you go the night before).

i see that you won the AA class in Sept, and Kelly Mason won the match in October. Thats cool. What rifles did you guys shoot?

Couple questions,
-its every first sunday of each month right? I dont see one on the calender for Dec.
-what class would i be in?
-how do you score points in the match? I'm assuming that each hit is a point? Two 5 shot strings at each distance...

Thanks,
Jeremy

well, as for the Firefighters Olympics, i think im going to shoot my little Rem 521-T.

i may try out this rear peep sight and see if it may work with the stock front sight.
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=36443/pid=16321/sku/Target_FP_Low

if it doesnt look like it will work after i do some measurements, i may try the HIGH version of the rear sight above, and get a front sight like one of these
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=7959/Product/TARGET_FRONT_SIGHT

OR, just shoot it as is.

Maybe get a shooting sling and practice practice practice. Ive got until July 11 2011.

Thanks a lot for all the input guys.

Jeremy, I dont think there is a varmint match in Pala in December, maybe I can get John Adams or some one from the Pala club to post the rules and schedule for next year.

cool. thanks.
i would be very rushed to shoot in december. i still haven't gotten my Jewell back from them. i talked to them last week and they said that it was done being repaired, so im gonna give them another call.

and i haven't got a load developed with the 107gr SMK yet. And I dont have 105 amax's and i dont know when my backorder will be filled.
