I've got this old gun #2

I've got another project going on now with this ugly old gun. The stock has been worked over pretty bad but the rest looks okIMG_0806.JPG
This one loads through the stock and I'm going to make it mag fed and make it similar to this picture I found while looking at gun stuffIMG_0812.JPG
The bottom of the receiver was quite a bit different than the mag fed version with a really big hole that had to be filled in . I have a mag fed version to take measurments from so that's a big help.IMG_0807.JPG
I made a filler piece from another receiver and welded it in. I almost brazed it in but figured I'd get less heat distortion with the mig.IMG_0827.JPG
Looks kinda crappy but theres no holes or bad undercutting . It finished out with a little milling and file workIMG_0828.JPG

I had ordered some parts for the mag guide and spring so I didnt have to make them this timeIMG_0849.JPG
Before clamping it in the mill vise I made two aluminum sleeves the same diameter to help get it setup with the bottom pointing upIMG_0849.JPG
I drilled and tapped the holes for the angle bar and spring while in the mill.

I also made a new end cap that was more like what I thought would look better and recessed an allen head screw in the end as a way to tighten it.IMG_0851.JPGIMG_0853.JPG

Here is what it looks like so far. I'll shorten the barrel to 17 inches and make a shroud for it and I've got a piece of walnut for the new stock.

Thanks ckaberna

I made the barrel shroud today and the rest of the related parts , the sleeve for the back end that goes around the mounting lug ,a reducer for the front ,the tube and a nut to hold it all together. I got the tube (20 dollars on amazon) hole pattern laid out and set it up in the lathe to drill all the holes with a 3/8 ball end mill. I also drilled and tapped the mounting holes for the sights while it was setup. The original cocking handle was really short so I made a longer one of those out of a piece of drill rodIMG_0861.JPG

Now it's starting to look like something. I knurled the nut that holds it all together and drilled 6 1/8 inch holes around the end to put a 1/8 rod through them to tighten the nut

A buddy dropped this piece of walnut off at my house so I cut off a piece for the new stock. It was just rough cut so it got a few passes through the planer to true it up then a couple trips across the table saw to get a straight edgeIMG_0811.JPG
After trimming the forend I put it in the mill and cut the bottom with a flycutter to true it to the top. I had to do the inletting in two setups cause I only have 11 inches of travel and needed a straight edge to set in the viseIMG_0863.JPGI've been drawing on this for a week trying to finalize a design , finally satisfied went ahead and cut it out with the bandsaw and finished the inlettingIMG_0878.JPGIMG_0879.JPG

This is supposed to have kind of a military look so I wanted a metal butt plate. A piece of 16 gauge from work turned out to be just the right thing . I made a paper pattern and glued it to the metal then gave it a dusting of black paint so when the pattern wore out I still had the paint outline to go by. Rough cut it with a cut off wheel then used a disk sander to finish it upView attachment 1303601IMG_0880.JPG
It wouldn't look right unless the mounting holes were dimpled so I made a dimpling punch to give the holes the right lookIMG_0883 (1).JPG

To give it the right curve I used the drill press for a press and worked the curve into it.IMG_0881.JPG

Now with that on I can do some more shaping IMG_0882.JPG

And here's what it looks like now with the back end pretty much doneIMG_0884.JPG

my weekend starts tomorrow and it's supposed to snow saturday so should get plenty of shop time this weekend

Well I've just about got this project finished. I found a rear sight from a thompson contender in my junk box for the rear and I milled one out of aluminum bar stock for the front. The front of the stock I left pretty much square except I rounded the corners with a round over bit in the router. My usual finish, minwax rosewood stain and umpteen coats of wipe on poly and buffed out with steel wool to a satin gloss finished it up. I still need to anodize the aluminum parts but I'm going to save them up till spring cause I'll have a bunch more by then.
Hope you all enjoyed and maybe I showed something you can use.IMG_0907.JPGIMG_0908.JPGIMG_0909.JPGIMG_0910.JPGIMG_0911.JPG
