It just goes to show....................

............................that even a blind squirrel gets a big, juicy nut once in awhile.

took my "budget build" .223 out for a spin today. details:

Standard Savage 10 action
Rifle Basix II trigger
Bartlein 12 twist barrel
Choate Tactical stock
Weaver T-36 glass
shot on a SEB Joy Pod from the bench @ 100 yds
52 Bergers with N133

i put the bucks into the Bartlein barrel from Southern Precision Rifles

i have shot a handful of 5 shot 100 yd groups in the .070" range with various rifles, but this squirrel beat those by a mile! just measuring it was tricky

i doubt I will ever do this again. My 6PPC has yet to get this small. must have been a passing Black Hole putting out gravity waves or something.

rifle usually shoots in the two's and three's with an occasional foray into the high ones.

Can't fool me. ;) Ya just lubed a boolit with some lithium axle grease and jerked the trigger for a one shot group . . . :p OBTW, that is outstanding.:)

Go buy a lottery ticket now!

That's amazing. Is there a reason for having the scope mounted pretty high?

i do like a higher scope, but this ended higher than i expected. the rings i bought were much higher than i believed they would be. i don't cheek weld when shooting this rifle, so it really doesn't matter to me.

When you use that fancy SEB bipod, do you load it with a bit of forward pressure like a regular bipod?

nope. not at all. I basically use it like a front rest. it rides on slick feet across whatever surface you choose to put it on. i use the Pod-Pad which is filled with sand and it helps with vertical damping and tracking. i essentially shoot everything including this rifle free recoil style with only my thumb on the trigger guard and index finger on the trigger. my shoulder is about a half inch off the buttplate of the stock and no cheek weld.

i always feel like i am "cheating" doing it this way, but i found i got the best, most consistent results with this style of shooting

That's interesting. I watched a couple videos of the Joy Pod and wondered why the shooters were using a pad under the pod. It definitely works seeing all the tiny groups you have posted. Is there something that keeps it from jumping instead of going straight back after pulling the trigger? Any reason you chose the pod over one of the SEB rests? Oh, and do you know if Southern Precision offers Bartlein prefit barrels for the Savage target action with the large shank?

1) without my shoulder touching the stock, the rifle moves straight back in the rear bag with no vertical motion. the recoil impulse itself does not move the barrel up vertically. the sand filled Pod Pad helps i believe with some vibration dampening and definitely improves tracking.

2) my purchase of the Joy Pod was originally for shooting F/TR competitions which require the use of some type of bipod. as it turned out, it works so well as a front rest both prone and on the bench, i saw no need for an expensive, hard to come by front rest. i even shoot my F Open 6BR rifle on the Joy Pod even though a front rest is allowed in F Open. in addition, portability and ease of setup of the Joy Pod is a big plus.

3) I have bought a couple of Large shank Savage pre fit barrels from Southern Precision. he does not list them on his website, but i assume he will still do it for you if you ask. if i remember, their might have been a small additional charge. best give Greg a call there and speak with him direct

my blind squirrel got LASIK!!! 20/20 now!

took my little rodent out today to test the two most promising seating depths. the test was inconclusive, but using N133 has really brought this barrel to life. i had tried LT-32, Benchmark, 8208 XBR, H4895 and N135. none of these powders has been as consistently precise as N133. only took me 1500 rds to figure it out. damn

Outstanding consistently tight groups! My dad has an old savage single shot action that we used as a parts gun (short Shilen 22BR barrel, original tupperware stock with a few mods, factory trigger with lighter spring and CAREFUL adjustment) and it continues to amaze us. Honest groups in the 3's and 4's with Hornady and Sierra bullets. I LOVE Savage actions. Best mass produced action for do-it-yourselfers like me IMHO. Thanks for the post.
